Have to say I felt a bit anxious reading this part of the first post:

Scrapped:

CF Booth, Rotherham
40118

...glad it’s just a buffet coach and not a certain Tyseley-based loco!

42519 ex-40416 - went to Sims, Newport 25/02/2020

Any idea what their intended use is?

When they were reported as arriving I had a wander around the points from where the yard can be viewerd and couldn't see them, so I assume they are (or were then) in the main shed off Holgate Road.

So do I... the dangers of not proof-reading your own posts!

Maybe spares for the NMT... but that is just a guess. Are they both owned by Network Rail, or still owned by DB/Arriva?

40732 is now part of the national collection. The NRM have that and a power car. With another power car to come. Fairly pathetic given the historical importance of the HST - a representative set should have been a given.

There is a HST coach parked up at the top of the Klondyke sidings in York Yard.

You can see it head on if you walk up the path to the left as you enter Holgate Park Drive. When you get to the top of the embankment it is visible on the left, has been parked up there for a good few months now. Not sure what it is doing there but sadly it has been "tagged" by the graffiti "artists".

From memory it is painted black.

Where would they put a full set? That’s a minimum of 7 23m Mk3s and two power cars at the best part of 18m each. That’s close to 200m

One could argue that the 4CIG/4VEP were just as important. They formed the backbone of commuter services from the south into London for 46 years. Yet no full set is in the national collection.

I didn't say full, I said repesentative - e.g. one of each main vehicle type, TGS/TS/TRFB/TF as a minimum. That would then have given the option of running it as a working train in future if they ever wanted to. Two power cars and a buffet are only ever of use as static exhibits.

4CIG/4VEP are not as important as they don't demonstrate a major technologicial achievement int he way the HST does, although I don't disagree that it would have been good to see a full set preserved.

Warehouse space isn't that expensive - they could easily have a larger reserve collection if they chose to, as many other museums do have.

Warehouse space may not be expensive and the science museum (who own the NRM) do have warehouseing. However it is dead money in that there is no revenue from it and would be more expensive than most as it would require rails inside and point work outside for shunting along with either a railhead connection or a suitable road connection as road clearances can be tight at the end of the day this is a charity that offers free admission and funds aren’t unlimited and also unlike other museums whose exhibits tend to be smaller, the amount of warehousing required would be vast which would significantly add to the cost.

As far as a running exhibit for railtours, I believe that a charter company would be better placed to do this. LSL has a full rake along with power cars and the 125 group also has a pair of power cars and no doubt will acquire coaches.

The original intent of the NRM was to take a full set, and a complete set was designated many years ago (no specific numbers). When it came to it they’ve taken one buffet and two power cars which is somewhat at odds with the intent. Evidently they’d done little thought about how they might go about it.
