Folk: Pls extend the 15 and 300 back to its full route and reinstate the X38

lothian: hmmmm.. thats a good idea, nahhh ;)

The 30 going to every 7/8 minutes is the biggest change I can see, not entirely sure how justified that is at the moment (it would have been very welcome pre covid!) but time will tell I suppose. That'll be almost all of the new buses accounted for with a PVR of 26.

There have been people on the Facebook comments adding pictures of full and standing buses; is this still happening at the moment? I took a peak time bus last week (X33) and it was fairly quiet for a rush hour, still plenty of seats available (there were upstairs anyway). Or is it a case of people preferring to use the normal services in the rush hour and ignoring the fasts?

There are also still people moaning that "the driver shouldn't let more people on if it's full". I agree with most of the people on this forum, that it shouldn't be up to the driver to police people, but should Lothian look at introducing "Bus Full" messages on the destination display when it gets above a certain loading (and then operating as drop-off only until enough people leave)? That would at least stop the driver having to directly tell people "no you can't get on", if they instead just drive past. Or would that just invite more criticism?

I agree - people should choose themselves whether the bus is too full. If people are getting on a full and standing bus then they clearly aren't concerned about the risks involved.

Bus Full messages could work but then Lothian will get phone calls such as Wee Jonny not getting to school on-time because the bus was only half-full. Stagecoach have limited capacities on their buses but it isn't enforced consistently. Some drivers are strict about it, only allowing the advisory capaity onboard (i.e. splitting couples up if it's one on/one off). Other drivers are quite lax about it, waiting until every double seat is occupied before putting Bus Full up. I believe Arriva and First do too - but not sure how strictly it's enforced or how the public feel about it.

I don't use the 30 much but it when I have it's been very busy between town and Craigmillar/Niddrie/Fort Kinnaird with physical distancing out the window so it probably needs reinforced along that section at least.
It also seems to have particularly poor compliance with face-coverings

The thing is not allowing people on because the bus is busy then entails all other sorte of problems e.g missing connections, late for work and the typical show up earlier isnt going to work on a cold winters morning for potentially multiple vehicles hence why ive been against Firsts idea of limiting capacity and turning people away

The 30s eastern section is definitely busier however the entire route is busy practically throughout the whole day. Enforcing capacity restrictions again is a bad idea but can see that it would be most effective on a route such as the 30.
The 30 is no poorer than other routes on face coverings all of them have a generally good compliance. maybe one of the drivers on here could shed more light on mask compliancy instead of from a passngers point of view?

Some companies use the ticket machine to check capacity and then the destination changes to bus full itself. Can Lothian not do that?

Having done almost nothing else with my life recently than drive the 30/2 mask compliance is very good - I can't think of a single instance in the last few weeks where someone hasn't presented some sort of proof of exemption on boarding or put on a mask when I've asked if they've got a face covering with them.

The exception to the rule being the occasional person off to visit their local street pharmacist going two or three stops (hope you catch my meaning - trying to be polite! ;)) - not much you can say to them without causing a fuss.

Think it’s a case of folk making a mountain out of a mole hill. Generally buses are not that busy. The odd journey here and there on certain routes may be nearing capacity but that’s usually corridors where multiple services go anyway.

If a bus looks busy and you’re not happy about getting on then don’t. Don’t get on anyway and take a photo to complain!

Mask compliance is generally good. Again it’s hard to judge with all the exemptions anyhow! One thing you do still find though (and won’t change) is people still prefer to cram in downstairs and not go up!

How would the ticket machine know how many people got off the bus? And if it means the driver needs to count off, some buses which are dual door would be even harder to do.

With Ticketer machines the driver has to manually input the numbers on/off and this is fed into the tracking systems and onto apps etc.

Are drivers meant to challenge people without facemasks? I had a driver tell my friend that he needs proof and that they all drivers are to challenge however 99% of other just let people on without them.

Yep. I’ll never understand why people do that. If it means I’ve got peace and quiet upstairs though, then they can carry on doing it for all I care. :)

I didn't think Lothian were doing the bus full thing, last time they didn't have seats blocked off like First.5

Just noticed some B7RLE’s heading west on princes street, would that most likely be more going from the depot at seafield to longstone?

Revised timetable for service 30 a week on Sunday I would imagine this will be in preparation for the new vehicles entering service. There is one still sitting in Marine Garage at Seafield and has for nearly 2 weeks.

Probably the case, as the Findlay Smith tracker shows that 171 - 173 are now at Longstone.
174 in service right now on the 30, I am guessing 175 is also at Longstone but there is a tracker issue so it still comes up at Marine.

Probably, but this also could mean that as there is more buses passengers are split between more vehicles meaning buses are not as busy.

Yes, 175 was on the 30 yesterday evening.

Is Lothian Country going to have a service change at a later date or are these of are these timetables for the rest of the year?
(Excluding 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th and 31st December)

I have no insight but seems unlikely unless service cuts are on the agenda. I seldom see passengers on these routes.
However given that you've raised the Christmas and New Year subject, is there any speculation (or reliable news) on whether the Lothian group will be running any routes either commercially or under contract?
I think they've picked up subsidised work from East & West Lothian councils over the past few years. Plus Edinburgh Airport of course. But obviously the city centre will be much quieter this year.

Yeah, I don't think there even might be a Christmas and New Year service this year due to covid.

Why not? People working for the emergency services will still need to get to work among others. Only change to those festive season timetables will be no hogmanay services

Precisely. There will be a city service. Volunteer drivers are being sought for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day at the moment.

Edinburgh are lucky to have them services plus good night bus network unlike Glasgow.

I was thinking that a lot of services wouldn't run because people wouldn't be able to visit others on Christmas.

Yes, although in the past this has indeed been more by luck more than anything else. The councils in Edinburgh and Midlothian decided against subsidising Christmas & New Year buses a few years ago, so they're run on a commercial basis. For Edinburgh there's some history to this stretching back to the Lothian's LRT days but no doubt all water under the bridge now.
I don't know what special arrangements are in place to cover losses for running commercially unviable services during this coronavirus spell but maybe these would extend to covering scaled-back festive period timetables along similar lines to previous years.
