Is there a reason diesel locos are used, or is it simply there will be a diesel section somewhere and changing locos is deemed a faff these days, as would need to bring a diesel up for that section anyway.

So far it seems 100% has been under the wires.
It's a pity it's not hauled by a Duchess.

What’s the situation regarding the royal train having slam door stock?

On a train somewhere in Europe
If I remember correctly, the Royal Train used to be 1X<nn>, where <nn> was the proximity to the throne of the Royal using the train. 1X01 - HM the Queen; 1X02 HRH the Prince of Wales - so this would put the Cambridges as 1X03. (or possibly 1X04 if Phil The Greek were 1X02.) So it seems a bit of a downgrade for them to use a 1Z<nn> train description, since any-and-every railtour or special working is 1Z<nn>.
It's been 1Z** for well over 30 years. When I first had dealings with it in the late 1980s it apparently ran as 1Z01 with the Queen on board, with the numbers increasing as the seniority of who was being carrying decreased but it has been running with a random 1Z** number for a few years now.

OK, thanks. At a software level - the schedules of trains with description nXnn aren't sent to ARS, so it can't route them. I'd been told this was a) for out-of-gauge loads that might be wrong-routed, and b) so that the Royal train wasn't going to be handled by ARS. From what you tell me, reason 'b' must no longer be the case - and the local instructions for the signaller to turn off the ARS sub-areas when the Royal Train is running will have to be implemented more stringently. (ARS does get nZnn schedules.)

Interesting to see a sleeper carriage from the DB management train making an appearance, is this normal for the royal train?

One of Healy Mills' few claims to fame are that it stabled the royals overnight on a previous tour. If it were to happen again today would be the day...
