New addition....

Most years the money my mother-in-law gives me for Christmas gets "absorbed" into bills and I never seem to get myself anything with it.... well not this year.

A few months ago I picked up an excellent boxed class 31 in green and early BR crest, and today this little beauty arrived

P1019528.JPG

This now complements the old Poole CL25 which was converted to DCC (hardwired) and now has a more modern body curtesy of Peters Spares, the Dapol 33, and the afore mentioned CL31. If I was to add to the fleet it would be an 08 shunter, but finding one of these in the period livery, and DCC ready for a decent low price is like locating the proverbial hens teeth.

Right, now I really need to get back into the hobby and sort out making a start on the scenic stuff.... I hear trees are the in thing these days :)

That model looks really nice. Plenty of detail - I seem to remember you mentioning your layout was N gauge? If so, even better considering the size of that unit. Sounds like a nice fleet too: some lovely traction there. :)

Thanks Peter.

Yes I model in N gauge - Here's a picture from the listing, showing how much detail is there for a small model

Its a fairly decent runner, could do with a light service, but very pleased with it.

Looking good Malc. Trees are overrated though, but at least you shouldn’t have too many of the damn things on the lineside in the era you’re doing so that’s something. ;)
Nice ballast by the way.

Thanks Peter.

That is a very nice model. It captures the shape of the units really well. BR Green has been appealing to me more and more recently so I'm going to have to find a cheap OO gauge one at some point :)

I actually roped my friend Steve into latexing some of the trees last night.

But then he had one beer too many and started applying latex to random objects like my gravy granules so he was asked to desist...

It's contagious then! This tree-making craze has started spreading through Devon. ;)
That gravy granules bit has had me chuckling - just what I needed tonight.

That's an excellent looking model, really amazing detail for N. I also like your track weathering and ballasting :)

Just resprayed some Triang Hornby mk1s from Maroon to Green and dug out some Peco ex Kitmaster cardboard interior kits - original price 2/6d, but they still work and are suitably period.

I’d love to see a photo once you’ve finished them?

Thanks for the comments on my ballasting. It was my first ever use of an air brush so quite pleased how it turned out. The photo makes the track look red, when in reality it's a dark brown.

It’s really smooth and bang on level with the sleepers too which isn’t always easy to do in N gauge. The work you’ve done there will really pay off later.

Temporarily on hold for a couple of days this week as it’s my daughter’s 20th and we’re doing things the next two nights, but I did just have a catch up of everyone’s threads. :)

Imagine how many trees you could make if you had six people all making trees at the same time! It would be like a little N gauge factory - you could probably make the New Forest in a weekend ;)

Thanks guys. Managed to get a few minutes to myself now.
Here’s some of the tree collection. These are the winter ones for my friends railw

I’ve got another load for mine too although I might not need all of them so I might give a few more to Paul.
These are meant to be slightly stunted Dartmoor trees.

I've just had to move my fiddle yard though a 90 degree turn. Having lost about wpm, Its length is now trunkated slightly, but on the plus side I do have an extra two roads to fill. The longest road will take a loco and 4 Min coaches and my voyager has had to become a four rather than five coaches long.

Rather frustratingly I had had too many little niggles following the changeover. It's DOC operated a and I find fault finding to be more difficult with digital than it was with analogue. I'll post some pics in the coming weeks.

That’s interesting, I did the same a couple of weeks back! What faults are you finding?

Will do. TBH they were going to be blood and custard (which most of the 3-L sets were back in 59-60) but then I realised they should have lining (which Triang didn't bother with....).
The interiors are fiddly but authentically 60s :)

Random power offs, short circuits, locos not responding promptly to command and/or temporarily dying on me.

I suppose you’ve got quite a bit of complicated wiring to work through if it started off as DC?
Did you have isolated sections built in originally?

I had the same when switching over from DC to DCC. It gets worse as you add power connectors. The main issue always seems to be around points, especially powered from the Y end. I am having to insulate every single point!

It started life as dcc operated and to be honest the only part of the layout that has changed is the fiddle yard. I did have to get a little physical with a couple of the legs in order to trap a rug under it!

Love the trees the latex does a nice job of softening the bent wire they would make great apple trees in an orchard.
I love tree making very relaxing
