This evening, BBC Points West local news has another report about the 80x trains. This time on them returning to service. It includes video clips from both Robert Nisbet, Rail Delivery Group and and Mark Hopwood, Managing Director, GWR.
It’s on iPlayer. It starts at about 13 minutes in.

the three C2C sets arrived through platform 15 at Reading (which is where that was filmed) - as they had been pathed through 12 whilst a train was standing there!!
They wouldn't be able to go through any platform without the pantographs raised though, also what looks like tail lights on the "front" and a distinct lack of a locomotive... ;)

I guess GWR thought it would be bad press to show a modern electric train being pulled around by a class 57...

Looks like a good Penzance, Bristol and south wales service is running. I'm guessing north Cotswolds will be the last to be reinstated as 80x? Certainly looks like the turbo service will continue tomorrow.

I’d imagine South Cotswolds via Stroud will be one of the last, on the basis that it is usually one of the first to be cancelled when there is service disruption.

Rather unfortunately, one of the two DMUs running this service has just developed a fault at Swindon!

EDIT: Both units operating these services have now developed a fault. A class 158 is stuck at Swindon with a communications fault and a class 165 requires maintenance attention on arrival at Gloucester.

Or it's just more convenient to have the loco pushing the 387s into Reading depot, as otherwise the loco might end up trapped. ;)

And there I was thinking it was using the new acme perpetual motion drive, which is obviously far more efficient than any conventional OHL system, hence no need for the pantograph to be up :D

The actual terminating point of the path put in the system was Reading DMUD which is the old triangle sidings not the TCD. As it happened I had already spoken to the Station Signaller to arrange which Depot Connection it was going to arrive at so it was only going to come through P13, 14 or 15.

Some good editing there! ;)

Looks like the 2 units at Worcester have found their way back to a depot.

Most of the units stranded should be moved today:

800021 at Gloucester & 800317 at Hereford > Stoke Gifford
800031, 800308 at Worcester & 802006 at Oxford > North Pole

Unless it was another one.... lol
Definitely was one of them there as I saw it too. Maybe fabricating memories here but think I saw it as 800004 (I wasn’t paying particular attention as I was sat on another train).

So what is the actual state of play now?

How many trains are in use and is the situation improving?

LNER essentially back to normal service.

GWR will be close to normal service by Monday. Expect some short forms, cancellations and different stock.

Much improved from last weekend.

Roughly hourly Paddington to Swansea/Bristol/Exeter.

The Swansea service I caught earlier was 9 cars, and the ex Plymouth this morning was 2x5 car

Presumably by way of a monitoring programme? Is an actual fix designed yet?
Well, the question before that is "has an actual cause been isolated" - whether it's faulty design or faulty materials or something bizarre. Feels a bit early for that stage.

That’s excellent news. I don’t think anyone cares about short forms or differing stock as long as their train runs.
