It's just coming out that the entire 800/801 fleet has been grounded this morning at LNER for safety checks due to cracks being found on them - LNER don't expect to run trains today.

Apparently it's actually all 80x for all operators.

Mod -

Given the unwieldy nature of this thread and the fast development of this incident, in order to avoid several conversations criss-crossing each other in this thread, please use the following threads for continued discussion in the following areas:

  • any general questions and updates on travel arrangements (including any confirmed unusual traction) to please use this thread in the Fares Advice & Policy forum;
  • any updates on speculative alternative traction to please use this thread in the Speculative Ideas forum;
  • any request for advice on specific journeys and trips please create a new thread in the Trip Planning & Reports forum as per normal arrangement;
  • any other discussion of the theme of "my ideas for xxx" to please continue in the Speculative Ideas forum, either in a suitable existing thread or a new thread if necessary;

Other discussion points may be further split out as time goes along.

Existing posts will not be moved across due to excessive workload, however please note further discussion on these topics will be deleted in order to keep this thread more manageable.

Thank you.

This is effective 12.10h on 10th May 2021.

Wow, that's going to cause some issues. I see GTR is allowing passengers to travel between London and Peterborough, but going further than that is going to become quite a mission.

Also Avanti West Coast allowing travel to/from Manchester for certain ticket holders.

Seems GWR is also having problems today.. same issue?

Also TPE 802s, apparently, though I've not had that confirmed.

Crumbs - that's not good at all! How the heck has this happened to a modern train and what's caused it?

LNER tweeted (but has just deleted it) that due to a problem currently under investigation, we have had to cancel some services across our route. It didn't enter my mind it was because of this.

GWR cancelled all long distance trains today - and saying no replacement transport. What about people who are away from home for business or other reason and need to return home? Different situation to people starting out.

Going to be interesting trying to get to London then today for anybody trying to travel as even if you go via Manchester Piccadilly instead which is being advised the West Coast Mainline is down to one train every hour from Piccadilly due to continued Platform availability at London Euston due to HS2 works going on there.

Neither GWR or LNER are showing this prominently on their websites. It should be a special message dominating the home page (with priority over selling tickets).

It's going to be a challenging day but GWR can operate their other trains and presumably book taxis if they can't obtain buses - which surely they will seek to do if all IC trains are grounded?

An 8-car Class 387 I believed substituted it from London Paddington to Didcot Parkway this morning. The 05:50 London to the North Cotswolds was started from Oxford with a 3-car Turbo (Class 165 I presume).

Presumably units which have already been checked and found to have no fault can be used?

GWR appear to be running a Paddington - Didcot fast service with 8-car 387

1Z01 0630 Paddington - Didcot
1Z02 0630 Didcot - Paddington

Service level is due to Covid, not HS2. Euston has 16 platforms available.

Wouldn't bank on that 0732 PAD CNM, previous one terminated SWI and empty to Stoke Gifford.
