Is there actually going to be emergency timetables published or just cancellations and delays on the day

I can’t see any actual timetable on say the LNER or TPE sites for example just information that things ‘may’ happen

TfW have set out that services that run through the red warning zone will be cancelled, but nothing yet about anything else. I expect it will just come as it comes.

I'm fortunate that the only train in England I have to use during the heatwave is the one LNER service that has more than a 2% chance of running on time, the 06:22 Newcastle - Edinburgh!

It is a bit of a moving feast at the moment.

Expect announcement of line closures for Tuesday between 12:00 and 20:00

Closed York to Kings Cross 12:00-2000 on Tuesday
Given that we are still 2 days away from Tuesday midday, isn't that over-cautious? Lots of people's plans wrecked and, if it turns out cooler than forecast, what an own-goal for the railway.
I'd put money on it not being as hot as forecast.

Having travelled up from London yesterday (15/07) we were told upon departure that:
  • Avanti would be running [a maximum of] 1 train per hour (presumably on the Euston - Manchester route, not overall!?)
  • A maximum of 60-90mph, with 20mph running in a number of places
  • Expected doubling of journey times as a result
  • The train's air conditioning "would not be able to cope" so it would probably get rather hot!
This information doesn't seem to be on the website (yet) but I wouldn't fancy being anywhere near a Pendolino if this is all true.

And if they don’t plan and it is as bad as it is, you are left with trains stranded with 1000s of passengers stuck.

Can’t win the railway.
Damned If they do, damned if they don’t.

EMR has now updated the website to include changes to the regional side.
One Train Per Hour to/from Sheffield (normally two)
One Train Per Hour to/from Nottingham (normally two)
One Train Per Hour between Corby and Kettering only (normally two trains an hour between London and Corby)

There will be no direct train service between Corby and London, connections for will need to be made at Kettering.

EMR Regional services

No trains will run between Cleethorpes and Barton-on-Humber.
Our Liverpool Lime Street/ Nottingham/Norwich services will only run between Manchester Piccadilly and Grantham
Our Doncaster / Lincoln / Peterborough services will be cancelled
Our Crewe / Nottingham / Newark Castle services will only run between Crewe and Nottingham
Services to / from Matlock will run every 2 hours
Our Nottingham / Mansfield / Worksop services will be reduced
No trains will run between Newark Northgate and Lincoln
Services will as booked between Leicester / Lincoln / Grimsby.

Re the Marston Vale the 230s would be failing all over the place, they don't like heat. I can't see any excuse for not running St Albans.

Is Tuesday now going to be worse?
By the looks of things Tuesday will be slightly warmer by 1 or 2 degrees according to the MET office for my area.

The MET Office forecast for where I live (right in the middle of the red area) has dropped from 40 degrees to 35 (Mon) and 36 (Tue). Still not very pleasant, but not record-breaking.

The forecast models are still showing some subtle differences with more recent output hinting tomorrow could be warmer than was forecast a few days ago and that the heat may cling on in East Anglia throughout Wednesday.

Based on what I'm seeing though, the record will go, somewhere and I think 40oC will be breached. I'm going for Rutland Water getting the max on Monday at 39.5oC and Marham Airbase on Tuesday at 40.6oC.

What is incredible is that those same models picked up on this 15 days ago and are still not backing-down. I see potentially historical events in the 14-21 day frame quite often but they rarely play out.

Spare a thought for Plymouth. 23 degrees forecast on Tuesday....heatwave, what heatwave.....?
Monday is still likely to be 30°C during the day in Plymouth. That's 86°F in old money. Quite warm enough, if you ask me! 8-)

I should also point out that there is the potential for some serious downpours from Tuesday evening through Wednesday and these could be more impactful than the heat.

my only real guess is as HS1 is built to French LGV specs then its prob designed to handle South France temps

Service revisions out of Euston for Mon & Tue are showing with heaps of pathing time in trains during the times of day which will have the worst of the heat.

Reckon you'll be proved wrong and there'll be somewhere in England recording at least 40°C.
I'm just outside Sheffield and the BBC forecast is predicting it will be 41c on Monday. Meanwhile the more reliable Met Office is predicting it will be 6 degrees lower at 35c; still very hot but hardly unbearable. Anybody would think the BBC were pushing a climate change agenda.....

HS1 tends to be fine - no speed restrictions were imposed during some of the worst storms this year that shut the rest of the Southeastern network. Delays on HS1 to E* will mainly be imported from late running SEHS services.

I'll take your bet. How much do you want to put on?

The met office websites location selection really isn't something to be relied upon - website services for any specific location are useless most of the time. Nothing to do with an 'agenda'

Most of the models are trending towards that higher figure, the Met aren't always renowned for reliability in situations like this!

Can anyone confirm what the likely situation is for Newcastle - Edinburgh on Monday and Tuesday please?

Surely more of an own-goal for the Met Office and other forecasters? The rail industry can only deal with the information it is given.

Probably best we all hope that turns out to be the case. I certainly don’t want it baking hot, we have holiday plans, but we’ll certainly amend them if it seems there’s likely to be issues. Having already been stuck on the M4 for over an hour last week (Newport tunnels!) I don’t wish to repeat something like that in high temperatures if we don’t really need to! So not just an issue for the railway.

The Met Office forecasts tend to be more accurate than the BBC in my experience.

Indeed! You select a town on the Met Office website but it only forecasts large areas, so you'll get the same forecast in one place as another potentially 70 miles away

35°c isn't unbearable, however try doing something such as lifting, carrying, shovelling aggregate or wearing lots of ppe and it very quickly becomes very uncomfortable.

Scotrail haven't published anything relating to the heat, so perhaps a near-normal service on their network?

(With the exception of the Dumfries to Carlisle services maybe?)
