Hello, recently whenever I’m using this app I’m repeatedly getting the following come up.

Any idea what it is and how to stop it?

I've had the same thing. Extremely annoying although it did disappear after a few seconds on my phone.

It’s not the best designed app. Prefer others for train running information.

I tried deleting and reinstalling the app this morning but it’s still the same. Is there another basic and simple app that is recommended?

Depends what you're after. If it's just live running information I tend to use RTT.

I just use it for trip planning and seeing if my train to work is on time. Nothing complicated. I’ll try my work phone later and see if that has the same issue. I’m glad it’s not just me as I thought my phone had been got at.

The player controls suggest it's trying to display a video ad of some description.

We don't have ads on Gov.UK or the HMRC "File your taxes" portal.

Why is it okay for the UK's official journey planning app - and official rail information website to be full of intrusive ads and pay-us-£15-a-month cashback scams?

If I want the times of trains from A to B I still find it the best way.

I just use it for trip planning and seeing if my train to work is on time.

For journey planning I'd suggest one of the TOC sites or perhaps Trainline. Their app is very good. For just checking if the train to work is on time I'd just use RTT. That's what I do, couple of minutes after the alarm goes off fire up RTT and see if the inbound working is running to time or not!

This is a good example of why I find it so puzzling that some want to limit journey planning/ticketing websites to NRE and TOCs. Why should passengers have limited choice and have to endure poor design and limited functionality?

NRE normally does everything I need timetable wise,it’s just this current bug on the app that’s infuriating.
I'm glad it usually does what you need, but isn't it good to have multiple apps, some of which may meet other needs, and certainly act as a challenge to NRE on how to do better?

NRE has a "fastest trains only" option available. What other apps have the same function as well?

Trainline has a good interface for this in my opinion. Well supported app too, just never use it for sales.

NRE should be the gold standard, technically being the governments app. The latest bug is when you click live departures for a major station, it just shuts repeatedly.

The tacky, clunky Google flash-type advertising could be causing memory to be limited, even on the newest devices.

A complaint was made to RDG (did nothing) then subsequently the rail minister who said RDG/DfT are now 'looking at this and the other matters raised'.

*do not search for this bug today... there's almost no trains :lol:

When using NRE on my laptop, about 60% of the time I get the following message

Bad Request

Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Size of a request header field exceeds server limit.

What's going on and is there any way of stopping it?

This happens when the browser sends a HTTP request header containing too much data. I'd say in 90% of cases the header is the Cookie header and it's usually the fault of the website doing something stupid to cause the size of the cookie data to balloon.

Sometimes it can be down to a browser extension.

As a first step, try it in a private/incognito browsing window / tab. Does it work when you do? Consider clearing your cookies for the NRE domain

Not sure I understand all that, but I'll try evicting the cookie monster!

Or I could try railforums own booking engine at tickets.railforums.co.uk advertised at the top of this screen

I have the same issue on my iPhone with a video popping up fullscreen just when I’m needing to look up train times or fares urgently

National Rail really is a poor app these days. It seems very unstable and unreliable. Seems to have gone downhill.
