Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

Are we discussing the actual possibility of B&M Stores disappearing or just cheap beer buying opportunities?
Oh no definitely the latter. I like B&M. There is a famously loud lady in Sheffield on the tills who is an attraction in herself. And despite the loss of Leffe, they are currently doing Vina Sol white for under £7 (£8.99 in Sainsbury) so I’m making the best of that before their deal with that Catalan artisan vineyard in the foothills of Montserrat runs out.

If you want me to get a bit more on-topic, perhaps Wilkos should start selling alcohol to save them? I wonder how difficult it would be to get a license?

£7.50 in my Sainsburys, only just up from £7, and then there’s the regular 25% off when you buy six of anything offer…
Must have been in Sainsbury’s in a bad week in Sheffield, but that was the price! Perhaps us northerners are seduced into paying more for a classy foreign name, whereas you sophisticated southerners realise it’s just made in a big shed near Barcelona :D. To be fair, I have seen it on offer in Sainsbury’s, but £7, no!

Another reminder that this thread is to discuss companies that you expect to disappear soon. I don't think that Sainsbury's fits into that category somehow. ;)

Debenhams is now owned by Boohoo and has a beauty store open in Manchester

Also, oddly in Manchester there is a BhS open - but only sells lighting.
That's not owned by the BhS group. Thst store has changed names every couple of years. I'm not sure it's licenced.

I've never played the Lottery so my knowledge is pretty vague but in my nearest Wiko I wouldn't think there was a great deal of room for a Lottery terminal, there are something like four cashier positions and four self service (card only I believe), Either they would have to change some of these or have the lottery somewhere within the store - for 10p per ticket doesn't seem to be worth it.
It's usually linked to the pos (tills) in chain stores and printed on the receipt or a 2nd receipt generated by the pos system. So should not take any more space other than advertising stands. So it's usually worth doing as its better you get the the 10p than someone else.

I remember in Up Pompeii Frankie Howard visited the store Marcus And Spencus. Its surprising they are still around after all this time.

We now have a thread for supermarkets that aren’t going out of business (that’s pretty much all of them isn’t it?) which you’ll find below: :)

Is this not old news?

The closure of most these was announced back in September with the full list published in mid November.

I think it has popped up again on various local newspaper websites, certainly on both the Andover & Salisbury website (even though it is irrelevant as none of the Spoons in those areas are up for sale)

It's definitely old news being recycled.

And in any case, you'd expect a large healthy business to close underperforming branches at the same time as opening/refurbishing others. It doesn't mean they're likely to disappear soon!

I think Poundstretcher have the writing on the wall again, and I know it's been said before. But, I was in one in Northern Ireland yesterday and the prices have doubled yet again on most things (lighters clearly price marked at £1 for a pack of two have a shelf edge label saying £2!), and the staff admitted that they've had no new stock delivered for a long while. The receipts don't even show the Poundstretcher logo at the top anymore.

I'm wondering if this recycling is connected with the CEO of Brewdog posting on LinkedIn recently concerning the effect of energy costs on the hospitality industry?
Would you like to pay £27.50 for a pint of Punk IPA?

Nope, I didn’t think so. But that’s how much you’d be paying in BrewDog York, for example, if we’d put up prices in line with our soaring energy bills.

Or how about £48.75 for a burger and fries?

Businesses all over the UK are facing the crippling combination of the worst cost inflation for decades and squeezed consumer spending power. Jeremy Hunt will make the situation worse when he rows back support for business energy bills from April. We’re only in the foothills of a crisis which poses a far bigger threat to companies than C-19. The sad reality is that there are many great businesses that simply will not survive 2023.

Surely they should make the Last Post the final one to go? Tim Martin would prelude it of course by denying Brexit played any part. It could be followed by a ceremonial pyre with an effigy of Jacob Rees-Mogg atop. I'd attend that one.:D

Not sure whether this has already been mentioned - and to be honest, I haven't time to trawl through more than 3,100 posts - but I have just discovered that budget outdoor gear retailers Millets went into administration in the second half of last year and have been bought out by Go Outdoors. This is already resulted in the town and city centre stores - still branded as Millets - ditching some of the cheaper poor quality brands and introducing some of the better quality ones favoured by the new parent company.

Go Outdoors has been owned by JD Sports for the last 7 years and JD have also owned Millets as part of Blacks for the last 12. What they did in the middle of 2021 was to put the whole outdoor leisure group into administration and then buy it back from the administrators.

From my previous knowledge of Spoons on that list

Silkstone Inn Barnsley...too small for a Wetherspoons really, especially when they have a multi floor venue literally a few minutes walk away!
Percy Shaw Halifax...part of the 'leisure complex' which has always seemed like a bit of a white elephant when I've walked past it
Thomas Leaper Derby...never understood this in the first place, they could knock a hole in the wall and you would be in the Standing Order Wetherspoons right next to it!
Angel Islington...this one surprises me a little, considering it is pretty much directly opposite the exit from a Zone 1 tube station - there is however another Spoons in the area a bit of a walk away
The Billiard Hall West Bromwich...think I must have bankrupt poor Tim a few years ago in this one by putting a couple of pounds in the fruit machine and winning a couple of hundred out :D Seemed to be one of the 'highlights' of West Bromwich which probably explains a lot, I guess most people just head into central Birmingham these days for a few drinks

Although I've never understood who would even consider buying them, surely if Wetherspoons can't make them viable then it is going to be an uphill struggle for any other operator!

I wonder if some of the large locations in what I'd consider to be prime locations (e.g. Angel) are in need of a major upgrade/refurbishment and that's a factor?

Some of the pubs have seen little care and attention for decades, and maybe it's just easier to cut and run?

The Millets in Horsham has had "closing down" signs up for what seems like months now. I asumed they would vanish at the end of the year but noticed yesterday they were still thundering on. Did wonder what was happening.

I was under the impression they were owned by Blacks, who have a store round the corner, and consolidation was the reason, but no facts to back this up. Will watch with interest. We already have a Trespass, Cotswold Outdoors and Mountain Warehouse in the same street so competition will be keen.

The Angel needs a bit of TLC -- like you say it's in a prime location yet never seems busy when I've been in the area. No shortage of competition around there either.

The Last Post in Loughton is always well patronised whenever I've been in there, so mildly surprised with that one. That said, so was the Railway (think that was its name) opposite Putney NR station, but that got snapped up by Revolution (ugh) in the last round of 'Spoons sell-offs. Much prefer the Fox & Hounds opposite anyway (decent yet cheap beer, and all the sport you'd ever need).

The Tollgate in Turnpike Lane could do with being blown up. Awful pub in an awful area.

The Foxley Hatch in Purley is possibly my nearest Spoons. The two nearest Wetherspoons to me have already closed - the "Skylark" and "Milan Bar" (Lloyds No1 Bar). Now its my alternative going too. It is a small pub though but has been busier since a lot of South Croydon only has that as an alternative. That makes me think Tm Martin must be closing anything where the lease is coming up for renewal - I know the "Skylark" had reached its 20 years.

I did not know about the above list and this is on top of the closures that impacted me last year. Pendrels Oak in Holborn is one we will miss. Feels drastic.

I think they're more likely closing pubs that are no longer profitable in the current climate. Given how energy prices and wages have increased, and people are reported to be cutting back on spending, I guess pubs that were marginally profitable in the past have moved into the red.

Although I would expect 'Spoons to benefit from the cost of living problems to an extent. Sure, some of their customers will cut back on spending, but as a bit of a 'bargain basement' they are likely to attract customers from more expensive venues who can no longer afford higher prices but still want to go out.

Unsure why this Wetherspoons news keeps getting recycled in the press. It’s often on local news sites where the haters just love to jump on some sort of doom bandwagon then don’t like it when I or anyone points out that this has been the JDW way for decades. They also dislike being reminded of the brand new often large openings at the likes of Birmingham New Street & soon to be O2 arena which will be fittingly named Stargazer as a nod to nearby Greenwich.

The likes of McDonalds, Subway, Costa etc probably close more outlets a year than Wetherspoons but never seem to get the same exposure when it happens.

I'm not really sure if this is a company so not sure if this counts - but I think the Sidings shopping centre underneath London Waterloo will probably disappear soon as its hard to think how it gets enough money to stay open with how empty it is!

So odd the marmite effect that JDW gets. I’m definitely in the love camp as cannot fault them 95% of the time.

I know the Last Plantagenet in Leicester closed in 2018 and is still empty.
It deserved to die, it was an awful rough pub.

I don't have that much love for spoons, they have cheap drinks. But the pubs are dire with sticky carpets and just a run down atmosphere

That’s not always the case even though it seems to get said many times. I’ve ticked getting on for 500 Spoons over the years & have a mental record of good & bad pubs in the chain. It varies greatly.
