It depends how you count platforms? Colchester has a very long platform face but it is diveded into different platforms. I only know about station in Great Britain but as you said UK you'd have to take Northern Ireland into account.

Perth's main Southbound platform (4 I think) was always considered to be the longest, after Manchester Victoria/Exchange...two stations of course.

Gloucester probably holds the honour now...at least since 1973 when Eastgate etc closed.

There was a long thread on here about platforms some time back.

It's Colchester. I've been to Levenshulme, seems pretty middle of the road length wise. I'd imagine a lot of stations exceed that.

This topic comes up every now and then and Colchester always gets discounted (correctly) as P4 and P3 are not techncally combined.

Gloucester seems to have the general consensus.

Longest single platform is possibly Darlington's platform 4 at 458 metres.

If Colchester gets discounted then why is Gloucester, which is platforms 1 and 2 combined not also discounted?

Gloucester followed by Cambridge, isn't it, for a single platform face with a continous track along it? Measuring (using google maps distance tool), Levenshulme only has 150m platforms, not even long enough for an eight carriage train.
Platform 11 & 7 at Edinburgh Waverly is around 590m long.

The double platforms at Gloucester, Cambridge and Waverly are all useable as a single platform whilst at Colchester it isn't it, as there's a set of buffers and trap points.

Sorry I should have been clearer. P4 and P3 at Colchester are staggered with P4 and P3 being on seperate running lines. Its not one continuous platform face.

According to Trains Illustrated, resorts for railfans no 20...Feb 1957 (my stamping ground!)

Platform 4 up main,(formerly 4+10, but now just 4) is 1672ft long (509.6m)
Platform 7 dn main,(formerly 7 south and 7 north) is 1415ft long (431.8m)

Bing aerial view shows these still extant...longest train these days, Highland Chieftain 125 and the Inversnecky sleeper.

Both platforms had crossovers halfway along for extensive exchanging of double headed black fives on the Glasgow/Edinburgh to Inverness trains as well as the Strathmore line to Aberdeen. Right up to the mid 60s there was also a lot of too-ing and fro-ing of restaurant cars, vans and extra coaches ably shunted around by caley bogies, mcIntosh tanks and caley jumbos...all extremely well documented by WJV Anderson.

ISTR platforms 7 and 11 at Waverley make up one of the longest platform faces, but I can't find the information on exactly how long they are anymore.

What about the shortest? Are there many NR stations that can only take one carriage?

Its been said in numerous places, not just here, that Beauly in Scotland is the shortest. Its less than 1 carriage length. There are others less than a carriage length, but not as short as Beauly

What about Folkestone? It's in the UK, but not on the "BR" network.

Not on the BR network?? Are we thinking of the same Folkestone?

Guiness world records say Gloucester is the longest single platform face in the UK (602m). That's good enough for me to believe.

EDIT: However that doesn't include the Cheriton Eurotunnel platforms which are over 100m longer than either Gloucester or Colchester (which as stated - isn't usable as a single platform anyway).

Tad off thread, but a nugget of useless information - Scarborough has the longest passenger seating bench on a station!

I actually meant the Eurotunnel Shuttle Terminal at Folkestone. My apologies, I should have been clearer.

Ah i see. And for all those ones that like precise information, its not actually in Folkestone!! Terminal is in Cheriton!! lol Tunnel itself is closer to Park Farm.

There's a very short platform on the Looe branch, Coombe Jn Halt.
Not sure how short it is, years since I was there.
