I feel this way with every forum, some members who are very active just seem to disappear for no reason. Years go by without them posting and mostly they're never seen again. I always find it a bit eerie. Anyone else noticed this?

Perhaps particularly so on the 'Disputes & Prosecutions' sub-forum. Some newbie posts on there having gotten into a spot of potential bother, hopefully receives some relevant advice, and then usually completely disappears, never to be heard of again.

I feel like that's likely to be a constant in 'Disputes & Prosecutions' since once their dispute is done they have little reason to return unless they end up in trouble again.

Maybe they suddenly and unexpectedly get married and have a family....no more time to sit at the keyboard any more!

....or maybe they've been married for a long time and the wife suddenly and unexpectedly throws the laptop out of the window, so that you'll spend more time with her instead! :D

Of course there is the more obvious possibility that the Forum member in question has now sadly passed away.

You look back to posts from like 2016 (when I joined) and see a vast swathe of members who no longer contribute. The ones who introduced you and made you feel welcome are no longer here to see how you've changed.

It has to be said, in my view anyway, that the General Discussion forum has declined in value considerably over those years, perhaps in the same way as others, much more famous and worldwide have become more fractious and raucous. Some who still post elsewhere on the forum seem to now avoid it, indeed have expressed this view. Covid 19 and its aftermath was certainly no help, with so much dispensing of heat as well as the occasional light, even though it necessarily got hived off into its own sub-section and one could ignore it if one chose.

Having said all that, I am pleased that a few whose views seemed to me to be intemperate to the point where they might be described as extremist have disappeared. There were some almost nakedly racist 'contributions' for instance, with similar phraseology used by ostensibly different people who'd joined at different times, and who fired back at anyone, like myself, who challenged them. T'm not the type to 'report' anyone, but I made a few notes, both mental and physical, just in case.

On the whole, though, even someone like me who knows very little about railways beyond the general, can still find interesting, informed stuff about all aspects of that, non-rail transport and Uncle Tom Cobleigh and all, so long may this forum thrive.

I think that in some threads, some people express forthright views because that is what they believe in. They may not be my views, but I respect their right to express their views, and I can challenge them if I think otherwise. Although they may express their views robustly, I have never felt insulted or intimidated - whether this reflects the maturity of the posters, or whether the moderators have intervened, I cannot say. ;)

A friend of mine who used to be a member on here passed away a good few years ago. I think of him regularly.

I suspect that is the most common reason for longstanding posters disappearing. I'd expect that where people find they have much less time because of new family or work commitments, they are likely to still read or post occasionally, rather than disappear altogether.

For my part, I don't particularly bother about people who've made one or two contributions, or who on one single occasion popped up for advice in the disputes forum and then were never heard of again. But I can think of a number of people whom I've debated with or read their contributions over a continuous period of several years, but who then stopped posting altogether and I've no idea what happened to them, and I have to admit I do feel a little sad about that.

While I understand the reason for anonymity and the lack of real-life identity information on the forums - it does seem a shame that that means regular contributors can just disappear and we have no idea if they are ill, have died, have simply lost interest, or what.

There are a couple of notable trip reporters I miss.

Keith Jarrett
And another one was 55013 (Phil Wood)

By clicking the photos in his reports, I can see he is still out there.

I'm in 100% agreement there, two really enjoyable contributors and I hope they're both doing well. Glad to hear 55013 is still active, and like yourself I have missed the reports of Keith Jarrett.

Agreed there @Cletus with Keith. Same with some of the other trip reporters who have vanished

There's been a lot over the years that have come and gone. Some have moved on to other things, from the appearance of things I see on here. Others appear to have just lost interest in trip reports, which is fair enough. I remember my first one way back in October 2004, it was about a mini trip from Swansea to Llanelli. It was essentially a practice one before the main event a few days later, which was a group meet for the Bristol to Brighton 31s. Those trip reports were tiny compared to my more recent ones

To be fair, I can't say I blame anyone for moving onto other things, and their not really participating much if at all on here. There is so much of the world out there to enjoy, indeed I will hopefully be doing just that myself tomorrow. I fully expect to spend a day off the forum as a result!

I can see the day coming that I stop visiting here on a regular basis myself. For now though, that's still not an option however it will be one day. The fact I've not updated my spotting book to this year's edition, amongst other things, suggests that the time is coming.

Some people only have time to read occasionally, and not post, but may still be using the site.

Also another reason for accounts being dormant is that, although we have a rule against creating duplicate accounts, we do have the discretion to allow this under exceptional circumstances, and I am aware of several examples of members who joined as teenagers, with personally identifiable usernames, and subsequently got jobs on the railways. Anyone in such a position can contact us and we'll help find a solution.

I must admit I am aware I spend more and more time on the Forum. Perhaps one day I will realise I am overdoing it and cut back drastically !. My partner would like me to spend less time on the laptop but then she spends more time than that in bed watching YouTube - so no conversation to be had there then !.

I have seen it on other forums where people suddenly stop - generally I think it is because they passed away which I find a sad loss. It is a bit sudden but then not many people are going to be in a position to announce their imminent death. My worst one was a whole Forum disappearing overnight.

Some lose interest and move on, some pass away, a tiny regrettable minority have ended up in prison and so on. I know plenty of people who used to post here but no longer do and are alive and well. I am in the second account club (with permission) and plenty of the forum staff and some others know my original identity so I'm sure there are others!

A friend of mine used to post here, but hasn't for some time.

Primarily, family life has very much taken over.

They also decided social media and forums were no longer for them.

Meeting a partner, getting a job, family life taking over, trying to cut back on internet use, loss of interest in forums in general (particularly if content becomes too political or members become aggressive). These are just a few reasons why one may choose to suddenly stop posting on forums.

Increased work load is one obvious one. Another one is realising that you're spending too much time on internet forums and cutting it down accordingly!

Plus, a realisation that the politics threads in particular stressing you out and you cut down on contributing on that side of the forum for your own good.

A lot of of it can be down to just getting out of the habit for logging in for a while, then you just forget about it.

I started re-reading Keith's thread last night, it was a nice trip down Memory Lane to a very different time on the railway. Still got 32 pages I think to go, but it promises to be worth the re-read :) After that I suspect I'll be doing the same with 55013's thread!

I remember a contributor called "Felix the Cat" who used to post some interesting trip reports. They seem to have disappeared for a good while.

I joined as a teenager and in the first few years probably met the definition of a "Long lost member", as I didn't really seem to grasp the forum fully, and while a strong enthusiast, my knowledge was well below that of the experienced/industry worker member base so was easily put off, although still went on forum meets. Once I was an adult though I got back into the forum more, and while I don't work on the railway, once I left Uni I became a much more regular user and had gained more knowledge by default, so no longer really feel intimidated. Maybe as much as 4/5 of all my posts have been since 2018.

I really ought to heed your warning about overdoing it, its summer now !.

True there is always the non-complicated factor.

It is a feature of this forum that there is a wide range of knowledge and reasons for posting. It is a wonderful place for information and experience. There is always the risk that those new to the railways (as enthusiasts or as a job) could feel intimidated or just embarrassed to ask questions. With age comes confidence leading eventually, if not humble/patient, to cynicism and bitterness !. Many old hands on here must be really patient. The moderators help to steer us through our emotions !.

this - plus some disagree with decisions, approaches or stances taken by the board overlords and /or other posters and decide not to post anymore.

I know a couple of people who have stopped posting - each for thier own, sperate reasons.
