I take the train from Luton to St Pancras via the Thameslink which I use an e-ticket to tap in. I then use my contactless card to travel underground however I get charged the maximum fare even thought I tapped in and out, what am I doing wrong?

If you use the e-ticket from Luton to St Pancras (NR), then tap in using a contactless card at the Underground barriers at King's Cross St Pancras (LU) and out - using the same contactless card - at your destination station, there should be no issue at all.

Can you upload a copy of your journey history (redacting any personal information) and/or provide any further information?

When you get off the Thameslink train at St Pancras you go up a couple of escalators and come to a set of barriers. You need to use your e-ticket to pass through these barriers. I suspect you might be using a contactless card here.

Then you'll take a short walk to the Underground and enter through a different set of barriers. This is where you need to use your contactless card. You also need to use your contactless card when you exit the Underground at your final destination

I used to do this all the time at Waterloo - head down the underground stairs and then at the first set of barriers tap my contactless card thinking I was entering the underground - TFL are very good at refunding this sort of thing though if you speak to them.

Yes me too on a couple of occasions. Have to have "brain in gear" at stations which are both mainline and underground to remember it is exit mainline then enter underground using the appropriate ticket / card. Also have to have brain in gear to remember to touch the validator at Waterloo when enter the Waterloo and City Line.

Oh, my mistake. I did use my contactless card at the first set of barriers, and that's where I went wrong. Thanks for your help!

If it’s the first time you’ve done this TFL will probably give you a straight refund if you talk to them, but if it happens again they may ask for proof of the e-ticket. That’s what happened when I went to football in the midlands and absent mindedly used my card instead of my paper ticket to exit Euston mainline when I got back.

Also, just in case you weren’t aware, if you can board at Luton Airport Parkway rather than Luton, contactless (but not Oyster) would be valid for the entire journey without the need for a separate ticket to St Pancras.
