Oh.
Nah you don’t need experience. You’ll go to signal school for 10 weeks then once you’ve passed that you’ll go to your location to train there until you ‘pass out’ as competent
Oh brilliant thanks for the reply, will the signal school be near my location I applied for? Or does it vary

They are dotted around the country and you will go to where they have a space available. Some areas seem to prefer specific training centers.

I know of people who will be working at Cardiff currently training in the Midlands and Scotland. Others manage to get a training location within an hour of their home, but even then it's recommended you take the hotel option.

Can anyone tell me how long after IST and being fully competent in your box(es) will take? So you get the full amount of salary?

2-3 weeks of learning the box is the figure I'm seeing.. Its up to you and your LOM essentially
It depends entirely on how complex the box/panel/workstation is. Two weeks is maybe possible for a very simple Absolute Block passing box but some panels or workstations can take months to learn. Most locations will be somewhere between the two extremes.

The idea we have been given is based around the amount of panels that you are required to learn and also whether or not your box has a simulator with trainer too. We Will. I think we spending some time on the simulator with the trainer and then it can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 8 weeks per panel. So in some locations you have to learn multiple panels so could end up being a fair few months until fully on the roster alone

Mine has been dragged out and still waiting on doing the medical weeks after submitting the onboarding documentation and dbs etc..

Unless you drunk cocaine tea like that NR worker in the news you should be good, just seems it's going to be slow process and as last minute as they can push it

Hi all, I’m new to the group and was wondering if anyone could share their experiences with been on a reserve list for a signaller role? I got put on the reserve list in September and said I would be on there for 6 months. However I notice today a new signaller Job has been advertised for my area that I applied in. Any information would be good. Thank you

Hi JB1986, I originally applied for a grade 3 position back in April. I was unsuccessful and put on the reserve list in June. I got a phone call out of the blue at the start of August offering me a different grade 3 position. I hadn't seen the position I was offered advertised, location wise it's not ideal, however I did accept it as I didn't want to pass on the opportunity.

I had my medical last week and still no contact from HR, however I did get emailed by a route operations support clerk to organise rostering, IST, accommodation etc. so I guess it's progressing, just waiting on the employee number.

Can anyone advise on some KEYWORDS to include in the original application please? I’m guessing there‘s no way they check every individual application/CV for every job - and it’s more likely they have a computer sifting program which identifies particular words or phrases.

Hi all,

I've applied to be a a level 3 signaller at Melton Mowbray. I have my interview later on this month at the grain store in Bedford, I think it's actually Bedford station itself.

To say I'm nervous about the whole process is an understatement. When it comes to interviews etc I really struggle to pull out the information that they want to hear.

I'm also having difficulty doing the online video assessment due to technical issues and it needs to be submitted before tomorrow.

Over the next week I'm going to heavily research the role and learn about Network Rail as a company.

I'm hoping hearing about other peoples experience will put me at ease. Is anyone able to reassure me that the interview won't be as bad as I'm expecting it to be. Also does anyone know anything about the signalling box in Melton Mowbray.

Hello mate, I sign Melton, feel free to hit me up if you need any info. You might find that Melton is just a central location to put on the advert though and you may be destined for one of the other boxes between Syston and Manton (Frisby, Whissendine, Ashwell, Langham, Oakham, Manton) depending on where the gaps are at the time you pop out of IST.

I was placed on a reserve list twice and still continued to apply for jobs.
I was placed on reserve list for a Grade 2 job and Grade 7 and ended up getting a Grade 9

Highly depends when they're able to find an IST course for you.. The demand is high from what i can see. Once you have an IST date, you will then have two weeks e-learning to complete prior

Hi mate, I tried to message you, but I'm new to the forum so couldn't quite figure it out. Thank you, do you enjoy it?
Do you work nights or is it just mornings and lates? I know some boxes don't do nights depending on location.

I'm so nervous about the whole situation to be honest, it sounds like such a great opportunity for me as I enjoy trains a lot and was looking at volunteering on one of the heritage railways in Leicestershire

Yep, if all dbs checks are done and medical done, then you’ve just got to wait for a formal offer email

Good afternoon

I am very interested in a career as a signaller. I am just trying to learn a little more about a couple of aspects if anyone would be kind enough to help

I have read that, once the transition to ROCs is completed, all signalling will be done out of ROCs. Obviously this move to ROCs takes advantage of modern technology and my concern is that technology will reduce the number of signallers employed, in years to come.

Is this a genuine concern for signallers? It looks a great job, but I want it to be a job for life, if I am fortunate enough to find and be accepted into a role.

Also, I have read that, traditionally, signallers were recruited into a lower grade signal box and worked their way up to higher grades. Is it possible to be recruited off the street into, say, Manchester ROC?

I live within a commutable distance of Manchester and Derby ROCs, so these seem a sensible place to start looking, given that these ROCs will consume the jobs of local boxes, if I've understood correctly?

I'm very grateful for any advice

Kind regards

Gradient

I’ve got a signaller interview coming up in person what sort of questions will I be asked?

How long before starting should I expect to hear from my LOM or someone else to confirm where to meet and at what time etc? Also I have seen a few comments on this thread relating to being contacted in advance to arrange hotels for IST and other bits and pieces. Could anyone shed some light on what I should expect leading up to my start date including timeframes please.

Hi, had my medical on 14th. Was contacted on the 17th by someone from Operations to arrange IST dates, hotel etc. and they managed to confirm my start date too. Still no contact from HR with employee number etc. Maybe because my notice period is 2 weeks they're waiting until 2 weeks until I'm due to start.

Interesting, I had my email from HR the day after my medical confirming my employee number and start date of 03/01/24, but nothing from operations.

A question about bank holidays I haven’t found information about on this thread.

I understand that if you work a bank holiday you can choose to either take 150% pay plus a day off in lieu, or 250% pay with no day off in lieu. But if you’re not scheduled to work on the bank holiday, do you get a day in lieu or anything extra in your pay for it?

In my old job with the ambulance service, we got a day in lieu whether we were scheduled to work the bank holiday or not. This was to prevent those who had to work on the bank holiday getting more days off work throughout the year than those who were scheduled to be off.

You get a day off in lieu of you opt for lower rate of pay. If you opt for higher rate of pay you get the day paid on top of your usual salary for the day.
