Terrible. The pension is good though.
Other than more spare movement, what's makes the tnc's terrible compared to tpe (genuinely curious) XC earn a 7k more basic salary and have Sundays outside the working week.

Also what is better about the pension compared to tpe's?

Thanks.

If you don’t sign part of your job you revert to spare and can pick up anything, so can be moved from a 5 hour job to a 10 hour job.
When booking on you can be taken off your job and given another job with upto an hour increase in your day.
Basically they can do what they want to you.
Pension is the New cross country scheme in the RPS.

When booking on you can literally be taken off your black ink turns , or just spare.

I think you can be given work other than your booked job but they can not extend your day so this usually works in your favour. But they can extend your day off spare by an hour, but they have to tell you within the first half an hour of booking on.

Not signing part of your job will only be if your relatively new to the job, otherwise you'd sign the traction and route for the depot so that wouldn't happen often anyway.

Depends only by not signing a shunt or a small diversion would have you reverted to spare.

The clause extending your day by an hour has been withdrawn as part of the RDW agreement.

Another couple of things for prospective Drivers thats kept quiet, it takes 5 years to get full sick pay entitlement, also 5 years to get to the full allocation(11 days) of floating A/L days and it takes a year to get on full money.

The most important question of all, do TPE give you free onboard tea and coffee on tap?

Do you get lots of northern and tpe drivers joining or wanting to join XC (Or even LNER)? Are they seen as the “best” in that region or are most people happy at northern/Tpe? Thanks

Mainly Northern, the odd TPE / freight man, not heard of any LNER though.

Cheers for clarification. Glad that’s gone, was a terrible condition. Sadly Avanti still have it.

Indeed, I only fell foul of it a couple of times, mind you there's still a commitment for late running.

XC is now one year to full pay.

Sundays are committed outside and surprisingly easy to get rid of since they're the worst paid day of the RDW week.

There's booking on/off payments if you're booking on before 5am or finishing after 2am.

The XC depots I'm familiar with offer a choice between a four day and five day week. The five day week results in a week of rest days once every five weeks.

ASLEF DCC seem very strong compared to my previous TOC.

Northern and TPE have much better T&C’s than LNER/Avanti/XC. At TPE with a few RDW you can earn as much, if not more than the aforementioned TOCs and enjoy better conditions. Horses for courses.

How does XC compare to LNER with regards to T&C’s? I hear LNER’s conditions are nonexistent hence the higher basic.

Funnily enough, the issue of not signing part of your job has been resolved, starting 10/12 an agreement linked to RDW means you can't have your job extended if you don't sign part of it, you now keep your book on time & rostered hours.

This was the same at both of the TOCs I've worked at, neither of which are XC.

Additional leave given for length of service is quite common in most other industries.

AIUI the 12hr movement thing never happens, the XC drivers I know tell me their rosters are structured such that you can't be moved 12hrs off spare 90% of the time because that would fail hidden, and the other 10% it just doesn't happen as there's normally opposite spares available anyway
