Proposal to withdraw Stirling/Glasgow LNER services: consultation updates

Glasgow Central and Stirling proposals​

On 22 January LNER will begin an 8-week consultation to remove two direct services to and from Glasgow Central and Stirling from the December 2024 timetable. The proposed changes will enable LNER to deliver a more efficient and reliable timetable of services for our customers now and into the future. These stations are served by other train operators and the rail industry will work together to ensure customers continue to be well served by rail links. These services will still operate between Edinburgh and London King's Cross.

Operational convenience I get but timing this with the fares announcement? LNER really aren’t bothered about getting a constant barrage of negative attention are they!

If you live in London, this isn't too bad, but for people further up North (even just Peterborough) it's a shame if these services get withdrawn, especially as we get so few direct Glasgow services a day and could do with more Glasgow services. I do understand why LNER wants to do this though as they have to get crew out to Stirling and Glasgow in the morning to operate a return service to London as crew would be based in Edinburgh.

Better utilisation of sets.
The evening Glasgow set would do a later than current Edinburgh to Kings Cross.
Unsure about the Stirling and how that impacts the timetable.

These through services are nowhere near as popular as the Aberdeen and Inverness services. This is probably due to their weird positioning in the timetable and only being once a day. I don't think it's a big deal to see them go personally, ScotRail seem to do just fine for connections.

The services will still run between Edinburgh and Kings Cross, but cutting them back allows better utilisation of crew and sets.

I’d have thought it would have been the Stirling set that did the later southbound service as that gets to Edinburgh nearly an hour before the Glasgow set does.

Makes sense for LNER to look at saving costs and cutting back some of the token daily services to focus more on their core market.

Scotrail run perfectly adequate services to Stirling and Glasgow this is the sort of sensible decisions that lower the cost of running the railway.

Also gets rid of dead ECS mileage and route knowledge.

Route knowledge doesn’t alter, same crews drive towards Perth and Inverness.

Pretty sure Stirling and Glasgow services are worked by Edinburgh drivers, but Inverness services are worked by Newcastle drivers, so there would still be a saving there.
