More Buses On Popular Clyde Flyer Route For The Festive Season Following Strong Growth In 2023​

Our popular Clyde Flyer route between Largs, Greenock, Braehead and Glasgow will be increased to help shoppers get out and about this December.
Extra buses will run on the busiest trips on Wednesday to Saturday from 29th November until 23rd December, making it easier to get out and see family and friends, do some Christmas shopping and attend festive events.
The additional buses will run as duplicates from mid-morning to mid-afternoon giving customers more connections to and from Glasgow and are in response to growing numbers using the popular coastal bus route - not least from under 22s and over 60s who benefit from free nationwide bus travel.
In 2022, the Clyde Flyer was named as one of the most scenic bus routes in the UK.
Alex Hornby, Group Managing Director, said:
“Clyde Flyer is one of our best-loved routes and performs an essential transport link for commuters, day trippers and tourists alike - all year round - and we’re delighted to offer more buses, more seats and more capacity during the busy, festive season.
“These extra buses are further evidence of McGill’s doing what’s right to support local economies in the vital Christmas trading season, and give the coastal communities in Largs, Inverkip, Wemyss Bay, Gourock, Greenock and Port Glasgow extra confidence in using public transport as a viable alternative to the car or staying at home.
“We continue to see strong growth in customers on our convenient, four times an hour daytime timetable - so much so that this extra capacity is very much needed. It’s important that we give our customers the confidence to use the bus - particularly given the ongoing popularity of free travel for under 22s and over 60s and the attractiveness of destinations along this busy route.”
McGill’s full festive timetable was published this week to help customers plan their journeys during the Christmas period as the company actively promotes the bus as a “go to” mode of transport during December. This includes the popular Glasgow Nightbus network being extended to cover Hogmanay on 31 December as well as at weekends.
Whether you are planning some Christmas shopping, visiting family and friends, or heading to a festive night out, opt for the bus to get out and about this December. Don’t forget, if you are under 22 or over 60 you can travel free with a National Entitlement Card.

I still dont get why they don't try a faster service over that route IE Largs - Kilbirnie - then on to the new bypass road then on to the M8 - Breahead. It used to operate and carry a decent load when Hartes buses ran it.

No Inchinnan involvement, so any Levantes appearing will be Greenock’s own.

I think I have a phantom memory of 904 services extending to Glasgow from Paisley in the summer - I looked into the timetables I have from a few years ago and this didn't appear to be the case, though perhaps it occurred at some point. It could definitely work, though I imagine McGill’s simply want to capitalise on the traffic to/from Inverclyde - the section between Gourock and Glasgow is very well used. I could see a 904X service operating seasonally, say Largs-Kilbirnie-Beith-Johnstone-Braehead-Glasgow.

They do indeed. They were formerly used on the 907 up until its withdrawal in 2019 and I believe they've only been used on school services and excursions since then.

Ah yes, I've just noticed the Levantes being used have apparently moved back to Greenock, they were at Inchinnan for a while.

Arriva ran the 18 into Braehead. I think it was cut back to Paisley before McGill's bought over Arriva but I can't remember.

McGill's temporarily extended the 904 to Braehead when the A78 was shut for works.

Was it not the Arriva 7 or 17 extended out to Largs?

The 18 then briefly became the 800 between Largs and Glasgow Airport and was branded as an airport link.

Does anyone know why the LED destination screens on the Yutongs are so bright? I mean they are too bright to clearly read where the buses are going to. Uncomfortably so. Can they be dimmed?

Its a smart livery but i'm somewhat surprised to see it on an Enviro200, i had been under the impression it was for Zero Emissions vehicles only.

It’s the National Entitlement Card (NEC), so says that over 60s travel free on this bus, or words to that effect. The 60 is a picture of a 6 and 0 candles, as you’d see on a 60th birthday cake!

Police say two people suffered serious injuries following the incident in Hamilton Court, Paisley.

Five people have been taken to hospital after a bus crashed into a high-rise block of flats in Paisley.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Hamilton Court, Calside, at about 12:20.

A spokesman for McGill's Buses said: "This is a live incident and McGill's personnel are in attendance to establish the detail of the crash."

Police Scotland said inquiries were ongoing and urged drivers in the Renfrewshire town to avoid the area.

One eyewitness who asked not to be named told BBC Scotland News: "It must have been really frightening for the driver.

"I was in my flat and heard the sirens, I didn't hear the crash. I was shocked when I came out and seen what had happened.

"A car crashed into the building a few years ago too, it's a bad bit of road."

Accidents usually investigate d and can lead to a trip to Edinburgh for an enquiry. Heard they have other issues like loads of missing runs every day that will be looked into as well!

I think you need better sources!

Major mechanical faults/failures can sometimes lead to a public inquiry with the Traffic Commissioner, which I assume is what you are suggesting. However, one isolated incident is unlikely to lead to a call up letter, especially if it was nothing to do with a mechanical issue!

Driver suffered a heart attack at the wheel, from what I gather.
