Tried to find a thread on this but can't find, apologies and please link if there is one. Nothing comes up on "search".

Not been to that area for a fortnight, but the redevelopment was supposed to be finished by now, according tot he proposals "early 2024". Is it finished and open, if not are we any nearer? Thanks!

Still closed as of today, some newish looking seating in there but nothing else and from my brief glance looked very much unfinished.

Thanks, hope the wait's worth it! Don't think there's access to the lift down to Fairfield St, as it all seems to be walled off?

I've found the original article I read from Network Rail.
£1.67M it's costing!
A bit ambitious to have it finished in a month.
From 3 April, passengers are being urged to allow extra travel time when using Piccadilly’s platforms 13 and 14, while the satellite lounge is closed for upgrades.

The welcome revamp will deliver:

  • Two new retail units
  • New seating throughout the lounge
  • More charging points for phones and laptops
  • A dedicated accessible waiting area
  • Upgraded toilets
  • New floor tiles and a fresh look

The lounge needs to close so the team can complete the upgrades swiftly and safely.

From 3 April, passengers will be directed to an alternative route to access platforms 13 and 14.

Scott Green, head of route stations said: “I’m sorry for the inconvenience closing the satellite lounge may cause for our passengers. The closure is essential to deliver these much-needed improvements as quickly as possible.

“Once complete, the revitalised lounge will offer greater comfort, capacity and convenience. We thank passengers for their patience and understanding as we carry out this work.”

The lounge is scheduled to reopen by the end of May. Until then, the alternative route to platforms will be clearly signposted. Step-free access will be available via the lift on platform 10, leading to the bridge for platforms 13 and 14.

Craig Harrop, regional director for Northern in the North West, said: “We would like to thank our customers in advance for their patience while the lounge is closed for these important upgrades.

“Please allow extra time for your journey if you are travelling from these platforms while the work is being carried out.

“We welcome this £1.67 million investment from Network Rail and the benefits it will bring to the customer experience at Manchester Piccadilly.”

Kathryn O'Brien, customer experience director at TransPennine Express, said: “This work will enhance the satellite lounge for customers at Manchester Piccadilly, and I’d like to thank everyone involved in the project.

“Our customers are advised to allow extra time when using Piccadilly’s platforms 13 and 14 for our services as there will be an alternative access route in place while work is carried out.”

Simon Elliott, head of rail at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “We are committed to working with our partners to improve the customer experience and accessibility at rail stations across the city region.

“The new facilities will make it a more pleasant environment for passengers using the satellite lounge, including an accessible waiting area and enhanced retail offering. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to those using the station, and we'd like to thank passengers for their patience while these important works take place.”

During the work, the lift on Fairfield Street and lounge toilet facilities will be temporarily unavailable.

Thanks for the link. Thing is, there's not much room up there for much, I notice there is now seating on the "overbridge" which I hope remains, although it's out in the cold; then again the former "lounge" isn't the warmest of places as it's open at both ends. Used to be a warmer "quiet" seating area where the shop was.

So I'm hoping it will be possible to sit in the warmth with a brew on proper seating, not those slidy bench things! Be worth the money if it becomes an agreeable area!

Are there any plans to revamp Oxford Road? It's looking "tired" although I love the warm seating area on the centre platform, the downside is the screens are difficult to view, not a problem though if using the phone/app to follow your service.

The big rebuild is pencilled in for 2028/29. Three longer platforms including a middle bay platform. Combined with signalling upgrade the new layout should allow another 1tph through Castlefield.

Hopefully its not a case of spending money to make things worse. Replacing the WH Smith with a waiting room was a big improvement.

I agree about the waiting room but miss that little shop though, used to buy a snack/drink and take it on board a train to London. Now one has to go down the platform to Sainsbury's (or a shop outside) and come back on oneself, and go through barriers twice - assuming you arrive via 13/14!
