Supermarkets discussion

A good horse steak is sublime. Is it illegal for supermarkets (or anyone) to sell it in Britain or just a cultural thing? For example, supermarkets don’t sell goat, but I can get it at Sheffield market.
I thrived on the horsemeat that was provided at every meal in the Imperial Hotel, Moscow, on a package holiday to the USSR in 1974. If you wouldn't eat it you starved, other than the potatoes and cabbage accompaniment or the rather dense bread that broke your teeth! Restaurants and cafes did not exist, or even a sweet shop.

It isn't illegal to either sell or eat horsemeat in the UK, but there's very, very little demand for it
Some years ago there was a horse meat burger stand publicity stunt near a racecourse on race day, those who tasted it thought it was quite nice.

It's a shame, if it tastes nice then would happily buy it! For me the entire issue in the scandal was that it wasn't honest on the packaging, rather than the concept itself

Heart is something else that doesn't seem to be popular in the UK. Kidney, liver, etc no problem, but rarely see heart in a supermarket. My father used to cook stuffed ox heart as a delicacy. I can remember raw reindeer heart on sale in Aarlanda airport and bringing some home, my other half was not impressed for some reason.

Lidl have been caught up in a germ scandal regarding chicken and E-Coli.

Just catching up with things, but as a former employee in a poultry processing plant, I can safely say this story is a load of tripe....

If there was a problem e-coli and superbugs, then all supermarkets would have the same problem.

I've enjoyed horsemeat in France. Tastes like a good steak. But there's no or very little demand for it here.

When I was a child (1940s) my mother regularly cooked kidney, liver and heart. I liked all three of those. I got ox heart a few months ago from an online butcher near Aberdeen.

How about brains? We had sheep's or pigs' brains on toast occasionally when I was young. I didn't like the taste or the texture. I didn't like fish roe either. Tastes change over time.

Sheep and cows' brains are out due to Scrapie and BSE. More generally it's just viewed as a bit of a hazardous thing to eat these days.

I had horsemeat sausage on a trip to Bulgaria a few weeks back. Have to say I wasn't that impressed, it's too lean and dry. But the tripe soup now, that was tasty!

I think I’ll create a new thread, because this is interesting.

Quite an interesting little video from Bloomberg on the oft-discussed private equity acquisitions of Morrisons and Asda
As a short summary, since Brexit, lots of British brands have been bought on finance by private equity firms, which have then struggled with the increased interest rates used to control inflation; meaning they have to put up prices.

Sainsbury’s seem to be having another nationwide problem today whereby they cannot accept cards.

Same problem being reported in Asda and McDonalds apparently. Just come back from my local Sainsburys, they were testing the card machines and tills, apparently they came back up at one point and then crashed again.

Interesting, I went through the payment process at Sainsbury’s at about 8:20 this morning and it appeared to go through but the checkout lady said it hadn’t, so I did it all again and it was fine. Since checked that I only have one charge. I’ll ask her tomorrow how her day went … she was bringing something in for me to read today but forgot which is why I’m going to see her again tomorrow!

Paid in B&Q at about 8:50 and about 10 mins later in the Asda/Esso garage and all was fine, 20mins later in M&S I had issues, contactless failed after taking about 30 seconds or so but chip and pin did work though still took a while to go through.

I think I know a good workaround for that problem....!
It isn't hiding in the shop while they close up and spending the night drinking the fridges dry is it? Only they said I'm not allowed to do that again.

Odd one in Sainsbury's today at a staffed till - went to pay by chip and pin and twice got message, 'card entered wrong way up', which it hadn't been. The cashier then asked me to swipe it, which only brought up 'card error', but on third try with chip and pin all was well. After yesterday's reports, do they still have systemic problems?

I've noticed the meal deal in Sainsbury's has increased to £3,75. I wonder how long before the other supermarkets follow suit with price increases for meal deals?

I think many supermarkets had already pushed their meal deal prices up, but disguised it by discounting back down the price for those with a loyalty card.

Nowhere near enough to a Pacer :(
My stance on this remains the same, I'll not mind an increased price for decent quality, so that includes sainsburys. But the Tesco meal deal is now too expensive for the quality of sandwich and choice of side orders you get
