The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) reached another major milestone over the weekend with the energisation of the new electrification system in North Yorkshire, ready to power greener journeys in the future.
This achievement took place between Church Fenton and Colton Junction, where trains from Leeds join the East Coast Main Line into York. This is one of the busiest stretches of railway in the north, with over 100 trains using the line each day.
This brings us a step closer to a cleaner, fully-electrified railway between York, Leeds and Manchester. The overhead wires, which now carry 25,000 volts, will allow more environmentally-friendly electric and hybrid trains to run at speeds of up to 125mph – that’s 30mph faster than they can currently run – reducing journey times.
Over the last 3 years our TRU East Alliance has installed 350 piled foundations to support this new overhead line system, including 300 new cantilever and portal structures, to support the 37 miles of new contact catenary wires along this four-track stretch of line. Work was carried out overnight and at weekends to minimise disruption to passengers as much as possible.
To maintain an equally eco-friendly construction, they assembled the new overhead line equipment locally at their nearby Joseph Lynn Logistics Hub in Sherburn-in-Elmet and transported it to site by train.
Local communities and businesses were made aware of the switch-on and safety talks were given to children at nearby schools.
When complete across the full 70-mile route across the Pennines, rail passengers will be helping to save up to 87,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year – the equivalent to 5.9 million car journeys along the same route. For people living near the railway, it will also mean better air quality and quieter trains.
Not yet as far as I know.Does this mean that power change over has moved further along to Leeds now?
Back in post #7475, Geeves drew our attention to the flickr page of Robert Stenhouse, who has lots of photos of the works between Huddersfield and Dewsbury. I just thought I'd mention that he's added a lot of new ones since then:

According to post 8052, the wires have been energised from Colton jct to Church Fenton so the connections must have been made(unless someone knows differently)!Am I right in thinking there is to be a major blockage at Colton Junction between Christmas and NewYear this year to connect everything up at Colton Junction? Thanks
Stops just north of the ladder crossover immediately north of the stationHow far does the Church Fenton electrification go please? Does it actually reach the station or just north of it?
Thank you. Just need to update my electrification maps to reflect the live status.Stops just north of the ladder crossover immediately north of the station
No, pan up and down has not changed and is unlikely to do so till the full work at Colton Junction as far as I am aware. Although plans could go course change! So does a train from York to Leeds pan down for the junction, then pan up for the fairly short new bit, then pan down again?
Demolished, and replaced. See attached plan.Pictures from either side of Colne bridge today.
There looks to be insufficient space to put two more tracks where the electricity substation is? Is it being demolished or are all tracks being slewed to the left towards mamas and papas?
