I was quite surprised how much it cost the other night when we had fish and chips - £12 ish IIRC. But as above, we share a portion between us as the portions are rather large, so still cheaper than most other take-aways.

We had F&C delivered yesterday evening and it was £21.15 - two large haddock and chips. Quite tasty.

What I hate is battered fish where the fish is thinner than a piece of paper or where it's just huge amounts of batter.

Retired a year ago after 54 years in the trade. Post Covid, the price increase in energy and raw materials was beyond anything I’d ever experienced. Talking to people still in the trade and it seems to have got worse.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
I remember pre-2010 prices for a large cod & chips in parts of SW London starting to go north of £7. Checking back those places still in business are around the £11 mark. NOTB I find that along the coast towards Port Glasgow and Greenock it's possible to get a double whale + chips supper for approaching half that.

If SWMBO and I visit a chippie we always get a piece of fish each bur one portion of chips between us. Chip portions are usually far larger than one person would eat.
That's the way to go, it what Mrs Trackman and I do. The last portion of chips we had could have fed 2 people at least. We don't have them that often, though. Same goes for Chinese food, we only order one portion of chips, in fact the local Chinese chip portion is huge.

A couple of years ago, two (female) cousins and I went for a fish and chips lunch in a chippy in New Quay (Ceredigion not Cornwall).
They ribbed me greatly for ordering the OAP special*, a small cod and chips with bread and butter and a mug of tea for a tenner. They both ordered the "normal" fish and chips. When the plates arrived I was the one laughing, their portions were huge and neither of them could finish theirs. The leftovers went in a takeaway bag for my cousin's cats and hens.

*we're all in our seventies, so fully entitled!

People get confused about 'Pensioner specials', thinking they are getting a discount because they are an OAP. It's not, well where I am are from, the portions are different - anyone can order it I presume.

Yes it's just a smaller portion for a "pensioner's" special. I don't know if they restrict who can buy one. What makes them think pensioners at the seaside have smaller appetites?

I noticed at the land end of Llandudno pier last month they were doing fish & chips for £8.90, which I thought was very reasonable. Not sure of the portion size but there was a good queue!

My local chippy charges £9.95 for a fish supper now; it was around the £7 mark a couple of years ago. To be fair, other chippies nearby have been charging more, but I've found the quality to be better elsewhere, so I didn't grudge paying the extra.

When I use my local chippy I always chose a child’s portion of chips as the standard portion is much too large. I am 64, so unlikely to be mistaken for a child.

I can't manage the amount of chips that they dish out. When my parents were still around any time that we had a chippy tea, we'd always order a supper and a single (fish and chips and a fish on its own, for example) because there would be enough chips to do two people. Now that I'm on my own, I find that half the chips are surplus; they're not wasted, though - I chop them up finely and the birds go absolutely daft for them!

Hmmm.....what's a double whale? Sounds intriguing!

At the other end of the age scale from my earlier post, I sometimes order a child's meal in pubs, and I haven't had that queried other than in fun. I don't try it if the child's meals are loss leaders expected to be sold with an adult meal though (e.g. "kids eat for a pound" or similar). The down side is that they're often limited to burger, sausages, fish fingers and suchlike.

Just found something on line which said fish and chips cost 17p in 1974. Taking into account average wages etc fish and chips has doubled in price since 1974. But apparently it cost 4d (2p) in 1952, even cheaper then.

Absolutely agree on the size of the portions of chips that are handed out being far too big. What with the price of the things these days i wonder why they do it, it hardly makes economical sense. If small portions aren't advertised as being available i generally watch what they are doing and tell them that that is enough simply as i hate throwing food away.

Fish & chips around £10 here in Stafford for large fish plus chips. Tend to go for a small portion of chips with the fish as they always give you too many chips.
I always go for haddock in preference to cod as you get the same-sized fish for the same price, but I find haddock far tastier IMHO, cod being a bit bland for my liking.

Same here. There used to be a significant price premium for haddock, but now it is much the same price as cod. Haddock is cooked to order, which is both good (fresh) and bad (takes time). Not always available.

Wetherspoons offer surprisingly good fish (battered in-house) but only chips from frozen. Its usually a better price than going to a chippy though!
No chippy would get away with offering so few chips, though, so as so often with Mr Martin's enterprise it's smoke and mirrors stuff.

Thats not specific to "Mr Martin" all pubs and restaurants serving chips would give that normal size portion, same as if I was cooking at home. But the food at Wetherspoons is significantly cheaper (and includes a drink) compared to other pub chains like Nicholson's, Greene King, Fuller's etc. and the fish is pretty good quality for the price.
As others have noted a chip shop portion of chips is generally enough for two to share.

Regarding one portion of chips being adequate for two. Rather than asking for 'two fish and one chips' which might lead the shop to assume that you are being 'tight' and give you a particularly miserly portion of chips (from experience!) I ask for 'Fish and chips and an extra fish' which creates a different impression...
Had the opposite experience at the excellent Vals Place in Par recently. I order 2 large fish, 2 small fish and 3 large chips. The guy looked at me wide eyed and said "is this for 2 adults and 2 kids?". I clarified 3 adults one of whome wasn't having fish and two kids. "That's way too many chips, 2 will be plenty".
So reduced the order as advised. He was right!

You've triggered a half lost memory - ack in the late 50's early 60s you ordered the quantity of chips by price. 'Two-pennorth, or 4 pennorth of chips, please'. And I think it might be the origin of the expression 'I'll give you a fourp'ny one'...

Re: 'Fish' and chips - If the seller isn't explicit about the species I'm not interested. I've had far too many flavourless offerings of 'fish' and chips at outdoor events but haven't yet come across that sort of vagueness on the high street.

It could be, but rhyming slang four‘penny bit = hit is more likely.

In Sydney (Australia) the average price I have paid for fish and chips is around $15, and sometimes you get a salad included too (along with, not instead of chips). You can get it from fishmongers rather than just a dedicated takeaway so the fish tastes much fresher, compared to anything I've had in the UK for under £8 in post-covid times.

However my and my wife's preferred species is haddock which you don't get in the Pacific.

Was down in Devon on holiday earlier in the month, and granted nice seaside place with just the one chippy, but still more than £13 for a small cod and chips (more than enough for one adult mind you, so god knows about the large!). Just over £50 for the four of us. Mad. Even the next nearest place (a half hour walk up a very steep a long hill inland) was more than £11.50 each.

Is that Barramundi and chips? Sure I had that in Brisbane once!
