Arriving into Sheffield I noticed a TPE train in-between platform 5 and 6 with skates on one of the carriages.

Anyone know what has happened to it and where it will be moved to?

Wherever it gets moved to it will probably be waiting for a path. Any vehicle which has a wheel skate fitted has to travel very slowly so it may well be a night time move.

It was there on Tuesday and our group recorded it as 185102. It will probably require a tow back to Ardwick Depot which will require a path along the Hope Valley. Luckily the line through New Mills is now open to make access to the depot easier.

Not necessarily.. don't think Sheffield crew sign Ardwick, and Piccadilly crew don't sign NMC.

Usually means a seized axle, as noted above it'll be a very slow move when it is moved, and it'll probably be even slower over points

Has it been moved yet only there's a 185 that seems to have been stabled up in the centre tracks for most of the week?

There's engineering work on Hope Valley line at Dore tonight so nothing running after midnight. Would it be possible to permit this unit to run through just before then?

Wheelskate moves are a nightmare to path! Due to the speed restrictions already mentioned, plus regular stops to examine the wheelskate, they cannot run during the day, while if run during the night they interfere with maintenance and engineering work.

Were you on earlies on the Sheffield w/s yesterday? The early run back with 5Z01 was very much appreciated!
Not yesterday, I was meals, but we always try and get rid early, especially with an 'enthusiastic' driver, and an older hand Signaller.

So chances are it will be moved in stages along the Hope Valley over a number of days?

Difficult. Heely loop is regularly used all day. The loop at Earles Sidings forms part of the trackwork used by empty and full cement trains.

Somehow ordinary traffic will have to be halted to accommodate it. There are line blockades from Dore Station Junction to at least Grindleford every Saturday/Sunday night until mid November. Possibly creep it along the Sheaf Valley and through Dore about 11.50 before work starts, but then what?

It had been assigned a path the other night via New Mills Central however they rostered a Piccadilly driver to it without realising they don't sign that diversion. Since then it has been problematic to find a path and a driver with correct knowledge to move it.

Imagine if it was all one company and could have gone to Donny for repair, or Leeds...

I suppose moving it to somewhere where it can be moved by road is out of the question as well? I can't think of anywhere at the moment where this would be possible

Possibly, although I am not familiar with the route and its recessing facilities.

Doubtful, more likely agreement will have to be reached to shorten, give up or cancel engineers possessions for it to pass during the night.

So a crew change at Piccadilly ?
could also ferry a Picadilly driver over to sheffield and have them conducted over NMC by a sheffield driver if they indeed don't sign it which I would have thought they did as a diversion .Although the recent closure might have had some impact upon that .

Thank you, it's appreciated but also good to see. At the risk of going off-topic, it's been a couple of years since I've been empties back from Sheffield, and back then the platform staff absolutely refused to ask for an early run as there'd been some kerfuffle over delay attribution over an early runner that then delayed something else (ended up being stuck to the station staff for belling it out early, apparently?!). Glad to see that resolved. We went in quite a tight margin between the London and the Nottingham slow this time, so I tried my best not to let anyone down!

Not sure why the platform staff would concern themselves about delays etc, we're ultimately the ones that clear the signal and get sent for retraining when it goes wrong :D.

There's a path in for it to move tonight. 2331 from Sheffield, 0244 at Ardwick.

The path says "Maximum 27mph" and certainly if you look at some sections it is definitely timed for more than 10mph. 12 minutes from Grindleford to Bamford, for example, is 18mph. Indeed, the entire journey averages out at around 13mph.

Grindleford to Bamford includes no points. Looks as though it may be passed by the last Northern stopper in Heeley loop https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:G32791/2024-10-14/detailed#allox_id=0
