Station pubs (part two?)

Standard price for their London station pubs.
Maybe, but when you go to Wetherspoons you accept a slight dip in environment, clientele and beer quality in return for extremely cheap prices. If Spoons is no cheaper than anywhere else in the vicinity then it's harder to justify drinking there.

Apparently there's a new Wetherspoons just opened at Waterloo called the Lion & Unicorn. Anyone been in yet?
Have visited a couple of times, first coincidentally on opening day 3 September.
All on one level including toilets!
Reduced menu compared to other locations, no steaks or grills.

Pints at the Brewdog next door are £7.45-7.65 in comparison

Though looking at their prices on the Wetherspoons app I don't think I'll be visiting very often - real ales at a whopping £4.79 a pint????

Yes, I’ve been. Perfectly good, with that nice ‘new carpet’ smell. Considerably cheaper than the Brewdog next door who sell cans at a tenner a pop. Also cheaper than the Waterloo Tap although that has a better beer selection.

The beer quality in Wetherspoons I’ve visited has been good. I’m talking real ales.

As a CAMRA member and noting the number of Spoons in the Good Beer guide l would say that your dip in beer quality is utter rubbish.

Festival beers were £3.49 a pint two weeks ago, which is exceptional value for central London and especially on a mainline station. Just after opening prices were £4.79 or £4.99 for cask beers, still better value than most nearby alternatives. I don't know anywhere nearby at under a fiver and plenty are well over.

No issues with any of those on my visits so far. Beer quality has been good, atmosphere is fine while accepting that it's basically a fairly characterless modern building, the clientele has been quite varied but nothing to object to.

Whatever. The price, however, was the same at St Pancras just 2 hours ago.

We have never struggled to find a decent non spoons in any town we have visited. Never. It really isn't hard to find somewhere.

Passed this many times. Any good? Must make an effort to pop in .
The problem sometimes is that in some places there may be a decent real ale pub or two but they may not open at all on Mondays or Tuesdays, or don’t bother opening until perhaps 4pm and then others close at 9 or 10pm midweek.

Like them or loathe them at least you know with Wetherspoons that they will be open all day, every day and food is served until 11pm.

How many times do you see a pub advertising serving food until 8pm and then approach the bar at 7.45-7.50pm and be told kitchen closed!

Not always 2300 kitchen closure in Spoons e.g. in Stoke Newington it is 2230. Otherwise l agree.

The newly refurbished White Cloth Hall behind Leeds Corn Exchange has an upstairs seating area which is next to, but unfortunately just below the viaduct parapet. Great beer, great food (its a food market type set up) and you can watch the services entering and leaving Leeds station.

How does the Waterloo spoons compare with the Hole In The Wall price wise?
I've not been in there for a while, but the King's Arms in Roupell St, which is arguably among the nearest traditional pubs serving cask ale, was £5.50 a pint in August. That's decent value for the area (and they usually have a good range on as well).

Slightly off topic as it's not a station pub, merely a short walk away, but The Maltings in York, a well-known pub selling good real ale for many years has closed down yesterday, apparently to be turned into a cocktail bar. Bad news.

Last time I was in there, early this year, I paid £5.00 for a pint of Vocation Bread & Bitter.

That's sad news. Thank goodness for the York Tap.

It is really. Before the York Tap opened, this was the main stop-off before the station. Even since, it's still a good place for an ale and generally popular.

Do we really need another yuppie cocktail bar ?

I share your dismay, but I think the cocktail bar is probably aimed more at hen parties than yuppies (whatever they are in 2024).

York Tap seems to have had a good endorsement:

"Topping a list of his favourite pubs is the York Tap"

A pretty good endorsement indeed. Seems hard to believe that it's been open since 2011 (seems like only yesterday it opened).

I moved away from London in August; before then I was regularly in HITW and - as mentioned in another answer - the prices weren't too high London wise. The pub was generally quite busy, and hope that the Spoons doesn't affect its viability....

Not quite a station pub, but right opposite the station is the Real Ale Way in Hayes (Kent). Not sure if the name is meant to be a wordplay on 'railway'. Good selection of well-kept Kentish and other local ales, plus real ciders at prices starting from £4.20 a pint.
A Real Ale Way has also opened one stop down the line in West Wickham. Not quite as close to the station as Hayes, but it is at least on Station Road. Similar beer range and pricing to Hayes.

that is bad news. A good pub with good beer lost. It has been on the market for a while.

Very spit and sawdust but a York tradition. What a shame.
Spit and sawdust - bit harsh!

Ok, maybe not as posh and trendy as some of cocktail bars near Liverpool Street Station…!

No, you’ve got me completely wrong. Many fantastic pubs (one regular near me) have sawdust on the floor. It’s a traditional. Maybe spit was a bit far but honestly, it’s a good thing. I’m not quite sure why you’ve mentioned cocktail bars or Liverpool Street.

If metro stations count I quite liked the left luggage room at Monkseaton is a recommendation from me,

BOD Stoke on trent already mentioned but can confirm many drinks had there by me,

Wetherspoons St Pancras is one I've frequented a few times,

Does anyone know the status of the pub in Retford looked like it was a bit derelict last time I passed through,
