GWR First Class (plus Pullman)

Inspired by the LNER thread, I think there’s merit for a GWR First Class thread (though as the offering is smaller the thread probably will be too). This includes the excellent Pullman Dining Cars.

A recent change is that in first class between 1700-1900 you now get a single glass of red or white wine, or a can of lager (not one they sell). However they don’t tell you this, so if you don’t know to ask, you won’t get it!

Possibly have a separate thread for GW Pullman?
When I've used GW First Class (rather than Pullman), I always feel disappointed. Perhaps I'm expecting too much.

Possibly, but the lack of threads on either so far, and the fact that it’s a service in first class, would mind me to keep it as a single thread.

Morning first class (on a suitably cheap upgrade or advance) I think is worth it - coffee, pastry, juice, porridge, snacks and a big chair and desk. But they are very quiet about what’s on offer.

The wine/beer has been on offer for several years and coincides with booze being available in the Paddington lounge. However some onboard crews are more pro-active/forthcoming than others.

Really! It was implied it was recent! I must have missed out of loads…

It is oddly tight. I caught the Swansea Pullman at Newport last week at about 1906 and was told I’d missed the complimentary wine. LNER would have squeezed three on my table before Swansea.

I first came across sometime in early 2023 so at least 2 years old, quite possibly more! Albeit my regular route is West of England and not South Wales.

Current snackbox contents

Nairn's oatcakes (as also served on BA Club World)
Tomato tapenade
Popcorn Shed mini pop bag
Nakd fruit and nut bar
Indulge tex mex corn snack

Only the last is a little bit dodgy IMO, the rest is pretty decent. Crisps, biscuits also available on the trolley.

Not a three course meal, but really not that bad.

I think it's an appalling offering, given what LNER and Avanti can serve on shorter journeys.

I guess it depends what you want from First class. For me it's about space, privacy and relative peace and quiet. I don't really expect a meal and actually quite prefer a snack offering to pick at however coffee and water is essential! Different strokes etc.

Had a spate of GWR first class and Pullman back from Cornwall today (And Paddington lounge last night before the sleeper). To be honest I must say I was impressed. In terms of lounges I found Paddington and Penzance to be significantly better than LNER’s lounges, in terms of range available and also cleanliness.

Onboard it’s obviously a shame they don’t offer food like LNER and Avanti does, but going into it not expecting that I was pleasantly surprised by the offering, a very good range of snacks and drinks (Unfortunately no sandwiches, although apparently they had just run out and had them on the way down). The host came through 3 times between Penzance and Plymouth, including bang on 1700 to proactively offer wine and beer. They definitely weren’t limiting you, you could have whatever you wanted each time. For the £15 difference I paid for first class all the way from Penzance to Paddington I was pretty happy even with just the leg to Plymouth. I think that’s very good value all the way to Paddington.

Onto the Pullman, which I have to say was just exceptional. Far and above the best experience I’ve had on a scheduled train service. I had the steak and it was very, very good, up there with some of the best I’ve had. The brownie for desert was also good. The Pullman team were absolutely excellent, and the Lead Host really stood out and made the trip, super attentive. The price came out to just over £50. To be honest for the quality of food and service I wouldn’t be unhappy paying that much in a restaurant, let alone once you consider it is on a train. They also said they’re not allowed to take tips, so there is no expectation of a further gratuity.

New Pullman menu from Monday. Tonight’s crew recommending the lamb from their sneak peak, I shall report back on Monday night.

I like the look of the new menu. No sign of lamb on it though.

Mains on it are Steak, Chicken, Cod and a vegetarian dish.

To be fair I think it must rather depend on the host, I had the opposite on a trip last year, I was offered a lager and I didn't realise they were available.

They were very focussed on the lamb too! I'll probably see some of them on the Wednesday eve up, so will ask what happened.

It does look a very good solid menu. Look forward to making my way through it.

Strange! I do like the look of the new menu. I've never used the Pullman Restaurant service before, but did use TFW many times before they started charging for food on top of the First Class fare.

So I had the following from the new menu last night

Tequila salmon. This was excellent, the salsa and avocado cream balanced it out nicely. 9/10
Poached cod. Flavours not quite so punchy, more rich and comforting but tasty enough. 8/10
Cheesecake. Bit disappointed with this, not a fan of biscoff (one of those weird, boring US foods like Oreo) though the cheese part was pretty tasty. 6/10

Sadly the lovely old leather holders for the menus have gone. Just a card menu now, albeit in colour and on good quality stock.

Carrot salad and chicken pencilled in for Wednesday night.

Was it gluten free? I often find their pudding is a bit meh, but it’s because of the gluten free alternatives that aren’t quite as good as the glutinous originals.

The Welsh Pullman used to have lovely branded crockery, but it went with the HSTs.

It wasn't the gluten free option, that's the brownie. Will give that a whirl too

Heritage carrot salad. Superb, a melange of carrots beetroot and watercress pulled together by a zingy pesto and seeds. Really unexpectedly excellent. 9.5/10

Miso Chicken. It’s a little bit one dimensional in flavour - some chilli and/or garlic might have rounded it out but tasty umami flavours, a big hunk of chicken and a neat rice cake. 7/10

Cheeseboard. Regional English cheese? Yes please. 10/10 as when is good quality cheese anything else?

This mornings EMR bacon roll is a bit of a comedown.

Anyway, looking for some advice. I want to take the lunchtime up train from Plymouth on Friday the 4th July. I've previously been turned away from the Pullman on this train on two occasions when boarding at Exeter without a reservation.

I'm guessing Friday is relatively busy, so I'm thinking I should reserve. This is cheeky, but do staff cross check reservations with your tickets ever? As in, if I reserve but have a standard ticket, would I get away with it? Or should I just suck up the cost of a first class ticket?

I've never had my reservation cross checked (and often not had my ticket checked either when sat in the Pullman). However it does feel like an abuse of the system...

Friday lunchtime likely busy though its not quite peak season.

Yes I agree I would feel extremely uncomfortable doing it! However it’s a £50 difference in fare…

Any advantage in buying 1st just to Taunton, by which time you should be on to coffee?

That's a very good idea...however I just found an amazing fare of £85, right from my origin of Gunnislake through to ultimate destination, Lewes, by going via the North Downs line. First Class for the Plymouth - Gatwick section.

and of course by the time you get to Lewes you will worked up a thirst for a superb pint of Harveys!

It did indeed, sadly. Along with the smarter table cloths. At least one piece made its way to safety though…

The lamb mini-mystery is solved. The menu has been updated and, controversially, the steak replaced with

Rump of Lamb, with braised garden peas, pommes boulangère, pickled mushrooms, lamb sauce and pea shoots. £7.50 supplement

That’s now 4 out of 7 starters/mains featuring a pickled element.

Tasting notes to follow..

I’ve tried both GWR’s Pullman offering and TfW’s First Class.

Put simply for me. If you want to do it for an experience, do GWR. But for me, TfW’s food was nicer. Yes it might not have been presented as well/polished, but it felt more authentic and not so much to show off. The Pullman is nice but as a regular everyday person I did feel out of place being there, even if I paid in full for it all.
