Had a spate of GWR first class and Pullman back from Cornwall today (And Paddington lounge last night before the sleeper). To be honest I must say I was impressed. In terms of lounges I found Paddington and Penzance to be significantly better than LNER’s lounges, in terms of range available and also cleanliness.
Onboard it’s obviously a shame they don’t offer food like LNER and Avanti does, but going into it not expecting that I was pleasantly surprised by the offering, a very good range of snacks and drinks (Unfortunately no sandwiches, although apparently they had just run out and had them on the way down). The host came through 3 times between Penzance and Plymouth, including bang on 1700 to proactively offer wine and beer. They definitely weren’t limiting you, you could have whatever you wanted each time. For the £15 difference I paid for first class all the way from Penzance to Paddington I was pretty happy even with just the leg to Plymouth. I think that’s very good value all the way to Paddington.
Onto the Pullman, which I have to say was just exceptional. Far and above the best experience I’ve had on a scheduled train service. I had the steak and it was very, very good, up there with some of the best I’ve had. The brownie for desert was also good. The Pullman team were absolutely excellent, and the Lead Host really stood out and made the trip, super attentive. The price came out to just over £50. To be honest for the quality of food and service I wouldn’t be unhappy paying that much in a restaurant, let alone once you consider it is on a train. They also said they’re not allowed to take tips, so there is no expectation of a further gratuity.
