They've got a lot of serious extention works in the run so I would imagine to meet demand they'll need more drivers.

I believe they are recruiting for 50 yes FIVE ZERO positions at the moment!!

That said on another forum only 2 of the 7 that admitted to applying actually got through to the first assessment day, which is tomorrow! One of those is me!!!

The unfortunate part is there is little (read no) information on the metrolink recruitment process out there and most of the drivers I've spoke to so far were recruited in very different ways!!

All we have been told is it will last 3 hours and involve climbing in and out of the trams!!

See you there Mr Pilot. I believe there is a Scaat (is that the right word?) and rules and regulations test to do but I may well have been wrongly informed. Information is pretty bleak, not just about tomorrow, but about the job as a whole.

Well assessment afternoon was as follows.

  • Driving licence check
  • Mobility test (Basically climbing in and out of a unit fom the ground)
  • The Dials test
  • Rules test
  • Brief break - those that failed the first two tests were asked to leave at this point
  • SCATT test (Shapes not dots)
  • Metrolink own test (Basic maths + English)
  • Interview

Sadly my day ended after the 2nd tests. I assume I failed on the shapes test as the metrolink maths and english was very basic stuff.

Well I can reapply in 6 months as per other TOC's but a little downhearted after 3 hours hard work to fall at the last hurdle. Hope this info will help other perspective candidates though.

I was one of the fortunate ones to get through to an interview. The interviews were meant to be held on the same day (although we werent told this until we got to the depot), but time ran out which was disappointing.

Metrolink do a good job of trying to relax you ahead of the various tests.

Unlucky . At least you got to the assessment stage. I didn't even get that far. Thanks for the info for future applicants.

Congratulations! When did they say your interview is then?
And best of luck!

They are going to ring on Monday. I think there were seven of us who got to the interview stage. Must admit that my brain was aching after the tests.

Thanks for the good luck. I aint 100% sure I want the job - if I get to the stage where an offer is made - which makes me feel a bit of a fraud to those who desperately wanted the job but didnt make it through.

I dont know nowhere near enough about the actual job. Shift patterns, wage structure, overtime rate, etc, although interview stage will no doubt be the place to ask. Any Metrolink Drivers on here willing to answer some questions?

If I was interviewing someone that hadn't checked that kind of detail out beforehand I would not be impressed. Interviews should be for clarification not information, you're selling yourself, showing the company you are interested in them. Much better to say something along the lines of "HR told me the shift patterns are... is that right?" than say you don't know what it is you're applying for and ask a load of basic questions.

Do you have a contact for the Metrolink HR dept to see if they can give you some answers in advance?

Fair comment although surely an interview works two ways - for both parties to ensure they are happy with each other. That is how it has worked at previous interviews interviews I have been to.

I have trawled through the internet and can find pretty much bugger all about working conditions etc. Usually when you apply for a job, terms and conditions are given as part of the invitation to apply.

As for having a HR dept contact, no. I shall have to see if I can find one.

Absolutely. Just make sure you show you have made the effort to find out! I guess I just read your post in a negative way.

Not always. Interviews are to find out what people are like and like you say for you to find out about the company. There should be a job spec but the finer points are something you deal with afterwards.

Yeah, got it lined up for next week.

Does anyone know what times the shifts are? i.e. 4am - 12pm. 8am - 5pm. 4pm - 12pm?

Does anyone know though. I live just inside the hour travel limit and traffic at certain times of the day are horrendous. If the shifts start before or after these times of the day then I should be fine. However, if I would be travelling to my shift during peak hour traffic I could be looking at 2hours travel.

Given the timescale it took for me it may well be the end of this month before you hear anything.

This recruirment and selection process sounds bizarre. Does Metrolink not send out a job description and information about shift patterns and pay rates to applicants as part of an information pack.

Information pack? What information pack? :)

There was a bit of a job description on the website and that was it.

I got a reply through yesterday inviting me to an assessment day in November.I had to wait about Six weeks for a response and like other people have said there is very little information about working for Metrolink.

I've noticed that they are advertising the job on their website again. I'm not sure whether it would be worth me putting in a fresh application (rewritten and triple checked!) or if they would just bin it straight out.

Yeah, got it lined up for next week.

How did the interview go in the end? What kind of questions did they ask?

Out of interest what work background do you come from?
