I've had a look at the routing guide and it looks like this is equally as valid via Wigan and Huyton as it is through Ormskirk.

Knowing me, I'll probably miss that Ormskirk train by a slither, so to confirm, am I able to go the long way round as well?

The fares check means only Preston is a valid RP (if I've done my sums right!) and hence valid on map NC showing a single route

Yeah, I just realised myself about the fares. Oh well, I'll just have to be punctual. :)

Why not buy a return Lancaster to Liverpool, and go:

Outward: Lancaster-Preston-Wigan-Liverpool
Return: Liverpool-(Town Green/ Break Journey)-Ormskirk-Preston-Lancaster

The reason I say Town Green is because it's the cheapest station to get to from Lancaster which also is covered by the Merseyrail Saveaway All Areas ticket enabling me to go around Merseyside this weekend.

However since going via Wigan and Huyton isn't allowed I'll just have to pay an extra £1.70 to get me to St Helens Central and do the same.

£1.70 is a lot to a student. :P

Merseyside All Area Saveaways are now valid by rail to Ormskirk (and can be purchased there, I think)
