FGW Class 142 farewell tour.

As alraedy stated on here planned for Sunday 27th November.

I heard planned to depart Exeter St David's around 9am and hoping to do Heathfield branch, City Basin (Alphington) & Okehampton / Meldon Quarry possibly Buckfastleigh?

Possibly up to 3 units (subject to availability etc)

Anyone got any further details?

Already stated on here? Never heard of it before. Only really interested for the track, but I doubt I'd make it somehow from Birmingham International off the Spitfire tour the day before in time anyway.

Some timings now available:-

Sunday 27th November.

2Z61 0930 Exeter St David's to Exeter St David's (arr 1000) via Alphington (0950 - 0955).

2Z62 1025 Exeter St David's to Newton Abbot (arr 1045).

2Z64 1220 Newton Abbot to Exeter St David's (arr 1240).

2Z65 1315 Exeter St David's to Exeter St David's (arr 1723) via Meldon Quarry (1420 - 1425) and Barnstaple (1617 - 1623).

2Z66 1730 Exeter St David's to Plymouth (arr 1830) Non stop.

2Z67 1847 Plymouth to Exeter St David's (arr 1950) Non stop.


No 2Z63 shown (yet) but it might be that a run along Heathfield branch is added nearer the time as there is a long layover at Newton Abbot between
2Z62 & 2Z64.

No way I could get down to EXD in time - unless, that is, my friend in Whimple can help...

Interested if possible for me. Will we get a 143 tour as well in time? :p

By not stopping anywhere it gets a run up the Devon banks, wonder if it will manage it in under an hour? A few "First" Dennis Dart fans on here I see! Go to Plymouth and catch the Plymouth Citybus "N reg" one's before they are withdrawn.

143's are staying at Exeter beyond December so no plans yet.

Due to engineering works and the fact I cannot just stay overnight in Exeter as I've got other plans for the previous night, I will be missing most of the tour however I should be able to join the tour on the last leg running non stop between Exeter St David's and Plymouth plus return.

My question is though is there any regular services which do run non stop between these two stations or is there no such service.

I will confirm closer to the date if I'm able to attend that is of course if I'm still walking from the Saturday night!

No services run non stop as they all seem to make a stop at Newton Abbott

The 0844 Penzance-London Paddington is the only service. Leaves Plymouth at 1044 and arrives at Exeter St Davids at 1137. The fastest run I've had on the service on this section is 50 minutes.

OK, I've now decided I really want to see this, so even if tickets are either too expensive or sold hard/not easy to get hold of, I'll still be coming down to Exeter and Newton Abbot to see this, so perhaps we should put up a thread in the meets section?

Timing details of the run along the Heathfield branch:-

2Z63 1055 Newton Abbot to Newton Abbot (arr 1210) via Heathfield (1125 - 1135).

I am not sure how far up the branch it will get - the line used to go for over 4 miles until a few years ago but I believe it might be shortened a bit now.

Anyone know the last passenger train up there?

Definitely 'looking good now' arriving back at Ex St D with a comfortable connection ' back home', a mix of jointed and welded rail should be 'fun' to say the least, positively 'riotous' even...

Given there are rail replacement services from the Salisbury route and the requirement to buy in person at EXD or PLY, that might be me out :(
