Lets hop on the Bakerloo line to Elephant & Castle, which should take no more than 20 mins, getting us there by 8.30.
You can get London Underground times from the TfL journey planner. No need for estimates here.

Roughly 20 minutes would be correct, although I'll leave it to OxtedL to give us an exact time. I suspect we won't get it though...

After a look through the shopping centre, and a purchase of Ivo's favourite bakery item for everyone on this great voyage (that would cost a bit  - 19 different people have posted at least once :?), it's off to Sutton on the 0900 FCC service, arriving at 0942 on Wednesday morning (after a short delay just outside Sutton which cost us 6 minutes).

It may well be but this game is based on exact times, not estimates.

I'm not sure about inventing delays either.

In light of the situation above we will go back to Paddington at 0749 on Wednesday until we can get some exact times for the next journey. Sorry to be difficult here but I'd like to keep an exact record of every journey.

No need to apologise for "being difficult"; half of this forum is unintentionally difficult at times, myself included. If we all apologised every time we were "being difficult" this forum would probably have 25% more posts than it already does! Ultimately, it's your game :)

Anyhow, from Paddington, I'm going to try to things right from a personal perspective. Last time I did this (admittedly in the other direction) it went horribly wrong, whereas this time it will go swimmingly. The 0811 205 bus will take us to Euston, arriving at 0839 on Wednesday morning.

P.S.: I don't think you're being difficult at all

Downstairs to the Wirral Line, where we await the 1133 to New Brighton, arriving two minutes before midday on Wednesday.

I must ask, is ferry travel permitted? I shall refrain from putting us on a boat on this occasion, but travelling on water is not mentioned in Zoe's original post.

Anyhow, on to the 1300 Arriva 410 bus to Birkenhead Bus Station, arriving just four minutes later at 1304 on Wednesday. Quite possibly the shortest leg so far?

Yes, if it's a timetabled service. You can't leave the island of Great Britain though.

Does this rule out anywhere on the Isle of Wight?
Yes it does, also the Scilly Isles. If people really want to go there though an exception could be made for these as they are still in England although in the case of the Scilly Isles you couldn't use the helicopter unless an exception was given also for that.

Thank you, Zoe, for that clarification.

Back to the journey again and deciding to see the Wirral from top to bottom, we go to stand 6 at Birkenhead, Claughton Road, Bus Station, where waiting for us in the 1315 Arriva Merseyside service 401 bus that takes us to Chester, Princess Street, Bus Station, arriving at 1418 on Wednesday afternoon.

I'm open to allowing visits to some islands by ferry if people are interested. I just have to be careful as if people were allowed to use the ferry to France then who knows where we would end up.

I think that the ruling that you made about the British mainland would rule out any trips to France, but the Scottish islands would be an interesting option, providing the name of the ferry operator and times of sailing and arrival are shown, but this is just a personal view of mine.

Meanwhile, we are still at Chester, Princess Street, Bus Station

The problem is that if you start allowing trips to Barra or similar the thread will die a very rapid death as we suddenly find ourselves short of options. I think I would have to suggest that journeys off the mainland be prohibited, unless there is a physical road or rail connection between the island and the mainland (e.g. Sheppey), but that internal ferry services such as the example of the hop across the Mersey that prompted my question be permitted.

Anyway, from Chester, the next stop is Wrexham, on board the Arriva 1 bus departing Chester city centre at 1445 and arriving at 1525 on Wednesday afternoon.

Good point, Ivo. 0300 on a Saturday morning does not bode well for logical travel planning, even though Barra is a special place, with its airstrip on the beach. Also, CAL-MAC have no need for my attempts to market their services :D

We decide one last bus ride would be good, providing it takes us to a railway station, so we board the 1544 GHA Coaches service 65 to Chirk Railway Station, arriving safely there at 1607 on Wednesday afternoon.

A fairly long wait is ahead of us as we anticipate the arrival of the 1648 ATW service to Cardiff Central, arriving into the Welsh capital at 1921 on Wednesday evening - just in time for any home game Cardiff City might have.

After a quick trip to the "cafe/box" just outside the station for some grub, there is a short wait for the 2319 South West Trains service to Guildford, arriving at 0037 on Thursday morning.

Faced with the trauma of being stuck in guildford overnight, we look desperately for a way out - but nothing! Alas, we shall have to stay here and be on the defensive - but we also need to sleep. So, after finding a secure spot to have some rest, we return to the station in time for the 0838 FGW service to Reading, arriving at 0917 on Thursday morning.

That last short journey did not fully take the stiffness out of our limbs from the overnight stay, so we look now to take a journey of some length to fully obtain the benefit of the warmth of such a long journey and after a hot drink and a chocolate muffin (or two), we board the 0941 XC service to Newcastle, where we arrive at 1446 on Thursday afternoon.

Thanks for your posting, Zoe...it has been over 24 hours since the previous one on this quiz!!

Over an hour to spare, which enables us to have a hearty breakfast to sustain us on the next leg, which is the 0733 First ScotRail service to Inverness, arriving there at 1029 on Friday morning.

Only a short time in Inverness as we now join the 1038 service on Friday arriving in Wick at 1455.

Wishing to see the other Far North terminal station, we board the 1600 First ScotRail service to Thurso, arriving there at 1626 on Friday afternoon.
Only a short stay in Thurso as we board the last service of the day at 1638 on Friday to Inverness at 2009.

Just time for a hot drink and a sandwich, as it is time to make quite a long journey, as we board the 2046 First ScotRail service to London Euston, arriving there at 0747 on Saturday morning.

We don't bother staying in our cabin but instead hustle over to Platform 2 for the 0803 Virgin Trains service to Birmingham New Street, arriving into Platform 2 at 0927, buying breakfast in the onboard shop on the way.
