Does anyone you know if there is a plan to open a station at Caldon Low (or Cauldon Lowe - not sure which is correct?) and if so when/where?

Also what are the plans regarding a station at/near Stoke-on-Trent and the timescale for thos?

The reason I ask is that a cycle ride we like to do involves doing the Manifold way then past Caldon Low, through the Cheddleton Valley, and then along the canal to Stoke. It's a long way though and we'd ideally like to take the CVR for as much of it as possible! (at present the CVR doesn't help us much, though we have used it anyway)

I Went on a UK Railtour earlier this year to this fantastic line all the way to C. Low, we were told they do hope to put some type of platform there although no dates were given, they also hope to come into Stoke-on-Trent during 2012, I don't know if they will come into the main Station or build a platform and loop close by, there seemed to be enough room to do both on the London Bound side of the station. I guess that depend on network rail. They also plan to go into Leek, although not in the same location as the orig station there.

The plan to run to Stoke is up in arms at the moment, the locals have complained that it will ruin where they walk there dogs and where there kids play.
The CVR replied that it is classed as railway and has to be disused for 20 years , before it is classed as disused.
No doubt this will end up in court or similar, although the council are backing the CVR

Moorland and City Railway, the company planning to re-open the line has received a £1.6 million grant.

http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.u...reopen-track/story-13722081-detail/story.html

The problem with the Leekbrook Junction to Stoke section is a woman who wants the line at Endon to be given village green status.

It is unlikely that she will succeed, the line has been used within the last 20 years.

She admits to walking her dog along the trackbed, so she admits to tresspass on railway property.

The problem in the Stoke/north Staffordshire area is that people seem to think the line is closed. It has never been closed.

I've not been able to confirm it, but I have heard that the line is now operational between Leekbrook Junction and Endon.

There is some disquiet among certain people, and a local woman is trying to register a section of mothballed trackbed as a village green - apparently its generated a grand sum of two supporting letters. Legally she hasnt got a leg to stand on anyway.

Yes is the plan to go through to Alton Towers, from Stoke on Trent, hope it does happen. These NIMBYS do annoy me sometimes.

Agreed NIMBY's annoy me.
Will the CVR run into Stoke-on-Trent direct? how would this fit in with LM, Virgin services, and what platforms will they use?

Their plans, along with sister company Moorland and City Rly are to run to Stoke, as to where they would put their trains, see my comments in # 2. (I don't know if they will come into the main Station or build a platform and loop close by, there seemed to be enough room to do both on the London Bound side of the station.) This is what was being said back in June when I went on the rail tour there. Good luck to them I say. :D

Have a look at the News Section on the CVR Website.

What could be nicer than arriving at Stoke from the main line and seeing a local branch line train puffing away in a near by platform, waiting for connecting passengers. It happens at Alton, Eridge, Keighley and some others.

Hopefully Robertsbridge before too long!

Would be great for them to get back to Stoke station again. Me and a friend were discussing this while down at the CVR a few months ago. I would think the loop and extra platform would be the way to go - whatever happens, I highly doubt that they will be allowed to run the heritage trains onto the mainline due to their lack of crashworthiness etc (and I doubt there would be enough available stock to run main line stock up the branch as the norm either)

Anyone know the timescales? I travelled on CVR from Froghall to Cauldon Lowe when it opened in Late 2010. Talk then was of opening up Leekbrook to Stoke in 2011. Obviously that hasn't happened so I wondered if anyone knows when it might?

See above comments, I think they are hoping for 2012, subject to some red tape being sorted out.

Don't know if that is a good thing, just show's your age!!

Perhaps he was very young at the time he did that journey.

I can still remember seeing a regular steam train come through Raynes Park in the late 1960s, it was a small black loco hauling a loads of good waggons, going towards the south/southwest. (and I am only XX years old.!:D) (It's funny as I don't recall any other steam workings there or elsewhere in the UK, all the other trains I saw were electric EMUs and the odd diesel going to Exeter.)

I love the fact that the woman admits to trespassing on the railway. They should have done her for it.

Quite...but they'll just let her off as a nutter...pointless pursuing her. Encourage her to get involved with the outfit by baking cakes, knitting hats or something...Jeezo. Actually she could be very valuable as a sort of a 'I mind when all this were potteries or fields or something'...like a guide on the trains...'of course in my day...' you know the sort of thing, get em on your side: bet the dog would love it!

Does anyone know if their 2012 timetable has been finalised yet? the site is still showing the 2011 times at present.

The Moorland & City map shows the route as open and looks as if there are plans for a station (in fact looking at that map you'd think there is one there already) however I can't find any reference to any plans to open a station.

It would be really useful for us to get on at Cauldon Lowe when it does finally open, after a cycle ride in the Peak District.

There was a shareholders/members bulletin from CVR 5 or more years ago about some utility company (gas I think but maybe water) digging up the trackbed between Oakamoor and Alton to lay some pipes so I would imagine it would be very expensive to reinstate the tracks now.

What is the latest on this extension?. Heard track laying will start towards Endon soon, and then onto Stoke?
Also heard that the extension to Leek is being fought by the locals who want to keep it a footpath

Have a look at their website Sir, there are some items about their extension and also about a special steam weekend made possible after the completion of run round loop at Cauldon Lowe today and tomorrow. Looks like good things are happening in that area. It will be good when they get the line into Stoke and Leek again. Hope the Nimbys don't cause delays though.

I only came across details of this line when I was doing some research into the County Mental Hospital (aka St Edwards Hospital) at Cheddleton, which had its own tramway system built in 1899 with an electricity supply of 220v DC via an overhead wire power system.

With regard to the proposed extension to Leek, the original station site is now occupied by a large supermarket owned by Morrisons. Where exactly is the site for the proposed new station?

I was there today. Here's the scene at Froghall:

Here here, are we talking about the kind of person who buys a house next to the local airport & then moans about the aircraft noise? :) Looooopy!

It's not clear if there are plans to open a station at Cauldon Lowe, and if so, when it may open. Anyone know? (A group of us would very much like to use it after a cycle ride!)

From our local area, the 108 bus service from Macclesfield - Leek - Ashbourne covers small local settlements in the area and passes many bridges and earthworks of the Leek and Manifold Light Railway from Waterhouses in particular.

I think there may be a platform there at some stage, but these things always seem to take time, it would certainly make sense in view of all the other extention plans that are in the pipeline in that area.

Does it? The Leek & Manifold ran from Hulme End to Waterhouses (where there was a standard gauge platform of the Cauldon Lowe line and freight , mostly milk from Ecton, could be transhipped) along the Manifold Valley. Can't recall many road bridges.
