Can and will train seats become comfortable again?

I agree with the point about bus seats. The seats on the Transdev Coastliner service (in Yorkshire) are much better than most of the train seats I travel on. The same is true for other Transdev 'premium' bus services, for example Leeds to Ripon. I suppose the problem with the design is they...

    Castleton South Junction Renewal

Are post-stressed concrete structures difficult to demolish? There is a certain level of danger when the stress is relieved. That should be 'post-tensioned'.

    Manchester Victoria platform 17.

Yes, it was on that line. There is information about the services at disused-stations.org . I remember my dad would commute to Manchester by catching a train from there to Radcliffe Central and then an electric to Victoria. 1708259517 There would be no easy route for parcels from Crumpsall and...

    Manchester Victoria platform 17.

I travelled on many of those services in the late 50's and early 60's. It brought back quite a few memories. That parcels train took quite an usual route past Red Bank, through Radcliffe and then to Bradley Fold and Bolton, parts of the route I never travelled on. Interesting that a Manchester -...

    Manchester Victoria platform 17.

Is it worth noting that the diagrams miss out quite a large part of Manchester Victoria station.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

The big crane is back at Barkston Ash and some of the new steel spans have been moved around the site. Is the bridge replacement expected to take place this weekend ? There is no advance notice of any road closure.

    King's Speech - Rail

There is an alternative viewpoint, a different understanding of what money is and how governments can use it creatively to increase the economy and improve the lives of the general population. You will find an explanation here Funding the Future, a blog by Richard Murphy No government...

    Direct services - for fun

What about Clapham (all stations) to Clapham to take people from south London to the Yorkshire Dales, and if the train passes through Manchester and Birmingham from there as well.

What else should have been included in 'Network North' ?

With respect to the number of trains, I was just using information provided by Drax which could well be out of date.

What else should have been included in 'Network North' ?

I would like to suggest opening the through line from Rochdale to Bolton and enhancing the line from Wigan to Liverpool so that through services can run from West Yorkshire to Liverpool and Southport. These services would pass through several major towns in North Manchester and relieve pressure...

What else should have been included in 'Network North' ?

The amount of new railway needed to go via Thirsk is less than that direct to Northallerton, there are fewer buildings in the way, open fields make it look easier to cross the A1M and likewise to connect with the ECML It brings the possibility of additional of passengers travelling as this line...

Station groups that should exist but don't

Reading this thread reminded me that the SR used have tickets to various destinations, so looking through some old tickets I have, an example : Wimbledon Park to Kingston, Norbiton, Stoneleigh, Tolworth and West Sutton via Wimbledon and back. (7/3/72, 32p)

    Ex–LYR Southport–Preston Route Closure?

There were timetabled trains to Southport from Rochdale via Bolton and Wigan. I believe some started in West Yorkshire.

    North Wales in the 1970s

I seem to recall that in the late 60's and 70's, if you booked travel on a group ticket the itinerary was provided with the ticket. I don't remember scouring timetables before booking journeys. You just sent off details of where and when you wanted to go and back it all came by post. I recall it...

Am I the only passenger who prefers / preferred Pacers to Sprinters ?

I agree that a good feature of Pacers was the visibility, particularly if the seat backs are low. This is why, in my opinion, they are useful stock for heritage railways, allowing passengers to have a good view out of the windows.
