200 Years of Railway in Art

Railway200 & Artuk have partnered up to celebrate the 200 years of railway in the UK and submitted 200 railway art pictures that we the public can vote on. https://railway200.artuk.org/ While I cannot deny there are some stunning paintings I was surprised to find that the modern scene has been...

    Log Train passing through Penrith

It appears that things for now are nearly returning to how it was previously with the Carlisle to Chirk log train now scheduled to run via the Settle & Carlisle line every mid week day except Thursday when it will run via Penrith. How permanent this will be we will have to wait and see.

    Log Train passing through Penrith

The Carlisle to Chirk loaded logs has for many years run via the Settle & Carlisle line Monday to Friday and as required Saturday, rejoining the WCML near Preston and only occasionally going via Penrith. Despite the longer journey it was usually quicker because the route via Penrith often...

    GWR (current TOC) named trains

1738574891 https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/named-trains-in-the-uk-2024.270046/ As you will see from the link above, I posted last June and the trains you mentioned are included. The GWR along with several other train companies dropped the Named/Titled trains during the Covid pandemic but...

Rail Freight Flows and News UK

Unusually one of two diverts over the Settle & Carlisle line on Sunday the other was 6C37 Chirk to Carlisle with the empty logs. It’s a long time that I have seen more than one WCML diverts over the S&C

Just search on the internet for Freightmaster and on the front web page is a contact link.

    Website for freight diagrams?

I have used Freightmaster for years and is my ‘go to‘ for all things freight. Yes you pay for it but it works out at £1.69 a week!!! If you bought just one coffee a week you would pay more than that.

Stations with "platforms" which could in principle be used but (almost) never are

Platform 3 at Penrith. This is mainly used as a loop to hold north bound freight. Occasionally it is used for charter passenger trains but I don’t remember the last time a scheduled passenger train stopped there.

    Darlington - Non Stopping Trains

Tangentially. Now that’s a long word to wake up early to, I had to look it up! Excellent choice of word though.

    West Yorkshire To Glasgow

I think this comment and many other similar ones highlights the problem. The route from West Yorkshire and beyond via the S&C is clearly the most direct route, just look on a map, the problem is despite the money spent to save the line and maintain it, it still needs further improvements and...

Rail Freight Flows and News UK

I guess it’s ‘one man’s meat another man’s poison’ As I live at the northern end of the line I am happy, but also sad because it’s less of the line having freight when we need it to be having more.

“We Invite You To Stand Behind The Yellow Line”

It wasn’t intended as a criticism of a staff member. If indeed it was a mistake as we all make those. That is why I posted it to see if it was a one off or whether it was a new policy. My post was an expression of my surprise as I felt a safety announcement should be firmer, however having...

“We Invite You To Stand Behind The Yellow Line”

This was an announcement I heard at Carlisle station today! Invite you? What is that all about? It is surely a safety announcement so why invite us? It gives the impression that it is fine if you don’t want to stand behind the yellow line but it would be jolly nice if you did. Was this a...

Named Trains In The UK 2024

As far as I can see The Jolly Fisherman was always an unofficial name but as your photo shows often adopted by the railway. As you will be aware this was a summer only service to Skegness run in previous years by East Midland Railway and became popular for its use of HST’s. Various rail tours...

Named Trains In The UK 2024

You make a good point. It is certainly something that frustrates me. Obviously there are no written rules as to what qualifies a train to be ‘named’. However it is generally regarded as a train that does offer something different or commemorates something special. in times passed it was...
