Nuneham Viaduct shut - Didcot- Oxford

Is that a big pile of leftover electrification piles that they are planning to bury in the river? Maybe I'm missing something, but that doesn't look like it will fit under the bridge

    That could be useful. Thanks

Ticket for Nuneham viaduct avoiding route

Ah, if I force it to go via Oxford I get a Chiltern option. Is a ticket from Marylebone the same ticket as I'd usually get from Paddington? I wouldn't want to actually travel via Chiltern because it's a lot slower. Travel would be off-peak this Friday afternoon, returning on Saturday.

Ticket for Nuneham viaduct avoiding route

I would like to buy an off-peak return from London to Ledbury. My preferred route is via Birmingham, which seems to be a permitted alternative route to the GWR service during the closure of Nuneham viaduct. But how do I buy a ticket for the direct route - I think the restriction is 'via...

My idea for a South East London Tram

Two points here: the first is that the South Circular isn't such a major artery as the North Circular, it's more like just another road among several alternatives. But its named status might mean that it's more acceptable to mess around with it - removing on-street parking for example. I also...

My idea for a South East London Tram

Yeah this would be a useful addition for the reasons you give. The problem was I couldn't see an obvious alignment between Beckenham Junction and Bromley and it would be probably be quicker to change on and off the train to get between the routes. Maybe a train-tram could do it if that ever...

My idea for a South East London Tram

I think there would certainly be demand for it. The 472 bus from Thamesmead to North Greenwich was first envisaged as a tram and it's very busy (in normal times). A tram could resurrect the original route along the Woolwich Road or it could branch from Eltham as an elevated line above the A2...

My idea for a South East London Tram

Orbital travel is pretty difficult in South East London. Compare the North and South Circular roads to get an idea of how much suppressed demand there might be. There is also a lot of travel between this part of London and Kent, which is fine by public transport if you're on a convenient rail...

    Shovel ready?

A bit mundane, but there's a load of renewals and resilience work to be done, and it could be accelerated. Problem might be shortage of skills and engineering access rather than money though. Maybe electrification and ETCS enhancements too, if only there was a reliable system for rolling them...

Bridge to Ireland possible rail link and tunnel

This is optimistic. Such a bridge will have thousands of structural moving parts that will need inspection and maintenance, and possible replacement over the scale of decades, not centuries. The structure will be vulnerable to shipping so as well as dedicated coastguards maybe there will be...

Is spending on increasing railway safety good value or should it be stopped?

The greatest risk in the railway is to track workers, is it not? Finding efficient processes to overcome people's natural tendency to cut corners is a difficult task. I wonder though if the most effective way to reduce risk to track workers would be to install GPS speed limiters, cameras and...

Bridge to Ireland possible rail link and tunnel

In the absence of any existing solution to that problem, I'd suggest troughs at the sump of the tunnel and a scoop on each train. Other than that, the drainage arrangements would be no different.

Bridge to Ireland possible rail link and tunnel

A tunnel would be more resilient and probably have a longer lifespan. A new approach would be needed anyway so it could reach the required depth without too steep a gradient. The evacuation system for rail is tried and tested in the Channel Tunnel. But a long tunnel doesn't really work for road...

Issued a travel incident report - Although had a promise to pay (Northern rail)

In a fair world there would be no case to answer here. The ticket office was busy so you used the machine and followed the instructions it gave you.
