I fnally got around to reading this having bought it a couple of years ago. Excellent well reproduced pictures but some of the captions are really disappointing. For someone with a supposedly encyclopaedic knowledge of the local railways Mr Glover makes some poor mistakes. The railway from...
There was a number 1 end and a number 2 end. I think the number 1 end had the radiator opening close to it (seen from the side). Not sure if you could tell them apart from end-on however.
This is the winner for me! Less remarkable but again on a smaller 2 foot gauge how about the various bits and pieces of bridge/embankment and cutting around Beddgelert built in 1906, never used and bypassed completely when the welsh Highland Railway opened in 1923.
On a small scale (2 foot gauge).....Tan Y Bwlch signal box......followed a few years later by Tan Y Grisiau signal box (OK it houses a token machine but is on a rather grand scale for that). I was slightly amazed when Porthmadog Harbour signal box was actually put into service as I just...
In most areas of communication I feel that precision is now at an all time low. When I started at work many years ago we used to joke about the effort put into drafting/redrafting a single message.....however the output rarely contained factual errors.
Some time between 1978 and 1990 (honestly don't know when) my morning Davenport to Manchester DMU was hauled by a Class 47. It had presumably come all the way from Buxton. I do recollect that it was April 1st and wondering if it was some kind of elaborate joke. The accelaration was excellent.
Couple of points here for information. The internal door handles on old DMUs were very difficult to operate.....you had to slide a metal catch against a spring using the force of your fingers or thumbs and did not have the mechanical advantage of a rotating handle. In practice very few people...
I'm not seeing any independent research quoted here.... It all seems rather subjective. The current position in this country is "no compartments" coupled with very heavy usage of the trains. There is surely a burden of proof on the supporters of compartment stock to provide some evidence that it...
If every other seat in the coach is empty then it definitely seems like your personal space. i remember two Moonies (I think) joining me in an old DMU in the 1970s at Bolton. "I'm Daniel"...."I'm Mary"......."We love you". I can't remember anything else they said but the journey to...
From personal experience we would head for a compartment if there was an empty one (typically we were travelling in a group of four). If no empty compartments we would head for a table in an open coach. What we would NOT do is join one or two people in a compartment. Other people probably...
