Cable theft at Bolton 28 December 2024

Well some of them are strategic spares of course, not scrap. Then there is the cost of removing the rails to take into account - not much of an issue for a thief in a transit van. Finally scrap rail is not made of copper

EMR Claiming tickets are 'sold out' on their trains.

The weird thing about all these mandatory reservations is that from my experiences on Avanti, trains are marked as sold out, but then due to people not turning up for their reservations the trains are half full. It's bizarre to force people to drive instead of travelling by train, and then run...

    Blue Trackside Fencing

The old-style netlon fencing with the stakes is still a permitted option but also has to be blue now. You're quite right to say it's all but gone because of the issue of hitting a service with the stakes.

No trains to call at Altnabreac for the foreseeable future

Appears from some of the latest videos that the police have satisfied themselves that the disputed land does belong to NR and that they have been in attendance during the construction to prevent them from being stopped from their works (as that would be aggravated trespass by the homeowner)...

Why did Mark 1 OHLE need to be replaced under the the WCML modernisation?

I understand that some of the masts on the NR section of line from Deansgate to Trafford Park are also from the original 1500V DC electrification of the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway which would date them back to the 1930s..

Last 2 trains of evening cancelled- bike unable to be taken on road transport

This is actually covered specifically in the Conditions of Carriage: So in short - you can have your ticket refunded if you don't travel, but otherwise fend for yourself. Although as noted above TOC customer service might offer something more generous

    Vegetation growing out of control?

I was mildly concerned by the amount of vegetation growing out of the viaduct in Stockport the other day. Has anyone seen it? I know it's fairly inaccessible but it looked to my untrained eye like exactly the sort of thing that is going to cause more problems down the line.

Euston overcrowding at TfL/LU entrance caused by new Network Rail departure boards

I thought it was for night tube actually, so the underground could be open when the station was closed

PM2.5 is lower than outside air in newer trains

For those asking what this means here is my attempt at a summary, hopefully not too patronising: You can think of this as being about dust. Normal dust in a house varies from around 1 micrometre to 400 micrometres in size. A micrometre is 1000 times smaller than a millimetre, to give an idea a...

Storm Isha may affect your journey in parts of England, Scotland and Wales on Sunday 21 and Monday 22 January

Looks like the last Manchester train got caught behind it 2 hours ago and has been stuck since

Storm Isha may affect your journey in parts of England, Scotland and Wales on Sunday 21 and Monday 22 January

I understand from the conductor of our train that this is a nationwide restriction

    Manchester Metrolink (Non speculative discussion)

My understanding is the new substation is a way off still. I know some work was carried out but seems to have fairly ground to a halt and not restarting imminently?

Licensing Act 2003 and Free Water on Trains: What Are the Rules?

I've heard a similar story of the Humber Ferry being particularly popular during the afternoon with locals who rode backwards and forwards drinking until the pubs reopened

How off-putting is it to change trains in GB - from rail regulars via 'normals' to OAPs to foreign visitors?

I would expect that a lot of people have one change already in most journeys due to having to change from bus / tube / tram / car / very local train service at the station. That means that a single change rail journey could often be a two change overall journey which is a lot less appealing...
