Hi there , great to hear your interested in volunteering at the ELR.
Where there particular areas of the railway which you were interested in ( Station, p-way, rolling stock maintenance or the operational side)? Also would you be looking to volunteer time mainly at weekends or weekdays?
I went out to photograph this. I think it did several round trips as I have photos of it at Wylam, Prudhoe and Hexham.
There was some locos on display in the yard at Hexham ( 56076 Blyth Power and one of the 47401- 47420 batch).
In addition to the accident report I also found it well covered in a book by Adrian Vaughan called Tracks to Disaster.

Happened to be in York today and saw this in the Monk Bar Model shop window.
Apparently it had been put in the window display a few minutes before I saw it.
It ran beautifully in the shop so off to test it on the big railway.....

What a surprise. The teachers unions and the RMT are nothing if not predictable.
And as some one says further down the thread what does going on strike achieve apart from reducing further the little support they might receive from the travelling public.
