They aren’t subsidising the services - the government reimburses a proportion of the fare to the operator running the service.
If you think it’s a subsidy - it’s to the passenger. No different than the subsidy paid to the pharmacist for your prescription
On the Sunderland services, I presume the power traction switch over will kick in at Northallerton whilst stopped at the station.
Is there a risk of this as could be blocking the main line?
They have been seen in Kilmarnock and Irvine for driver familiarisation.

Over all some movement of routes but looks to be no real increase in resource requirements.
Some interesting comments on fare increases and viability of services - are we starting to see more tightening of purse strings at Lothian??
