You wait until there is a pile up of people on the escalator in the rush hour because someone was distracted by the horrorgram...

Does a passenger or a retail assistant snapping and smashing the hologram to pieces count as "an accident" for this purpose?

 I must admit, I don't find it that bad - but then again I've usually got my headphones in so I can't hear it !

Just thought I would drop a quick note to explain that the Leeds VA was only loaned to Network Rail for a week to gauge the response from passengers.
It is in one piece and safely back with us.
Despite the annoyance most of you have with regard the continuous verbal message these have been a great success shown by the huge and sharp increase in elevator (lift) usage while the VA has been in position.
Unfortunately standard signage has continued to be ignored and all efforts to guide people to use the elevator (lift) have failed and so we do expect a number of these to be deployed where escalator incidents are seen regularly.
You comments regarding the volume and "lift" "elevator" debate are much appreciated and we will take these into account when designing further systems.
Further constructive comments are always welcome.

Given the fact all signs around the station say 'Lifts', I'd suggest that the use of elevator is dropped.

I can't comment on Leeds, but I've not noticed any increase in usage of the lift at King's Cross by people with bags. All the times I've looked, the lift is still used by people with buggies or people in wheelchairs. And, thanks to the rather poor planning, there are often quite long queues for the lifts because they're so bloody small - and anyone that might consider using the lift will either go back to the escalator and try it anyway, or simply not go upstairs at all.

Of course, I've not been there often enough for what I've observed to be in any way considered scientific.

I also wonder if this is really much better than having an audio-only system near the escalators. Besides the initial 'wow factor', seeing a rather poorly edited video clip repeating itself over and over doesn't add that much. It doesn't even look that great, with a giant box for the projector and a rather washed out image on the display/board.

As it is the sound that is most irksome, may I suggest you have a flashing sign that says in large script:
'Carrying or dragging heavy luggage? Please use the lift(s)'.
You could even have that in several languages!.

So you and Network Rail have already decided that you'll be installing more of these monstrosities, despite the constant noise pollution.

I fail to see the point in providing more "constructive feedback", as you've clearly made your mind up. Shame. You could achieve the same by putting bollards at the base of the escalator, like many airports and department stores have done, but there we go.

One last thing though: perhaps you need to re-record the actress delivering the message, as her hand gestures before speaking look just like she's making the w****r sign to the production staff off camera.

Hi,

Was anyone asking passengers in Leeds what they thought? Or was it just based on what actions they took?

I passed through Leeds several times whilst it was there but didn't see anyone asking about it.

Have there been two at Kings Cross or is it the same one being moved between the two escalators?

I noticed last night there wasn't the one nearest Platform 9 any more.

The one at Kings Cross has been back a few weeks. Annoying as ever, they don't seem to have taken any feedback into account - it's still telling people to use the elevators (signed as lifts).

Mad. Maybe if they changed all the signs to say elevators, it might make some sense.

What a stupid idea. Say elevators in case people don't know what a lift is, then have all the signs saying 'lift'.

DUH!

There were 2 at Kings Cross last week = one by each escalator.
it doesn't make much difference - someone took a huge case (that they could hardly lift) past it & onto the escalator.

There are three now - one by each of the escalators up to the balcony and one by the barriers on to the bridge.

And they wonder why we all wear headphones...

Only cleansing fire can prevent the spread of this menace. Sadly, I'm all out.

Scary.

I don't much fancy being forced to use elevators for the rest of my life by a new breed of holograms that became self-aware.

We must destroy them now, while we still have a chance.

Some people dislike or distrust lifts. There was a recent report in local media that, for the second time this year, somebody had been trapped in a failed lift at St. Helens.

If as a result of such a mishap, a passnger misses the only train on which their tickets is valid, would they be allowed to use a following service at no extra charge ?

Is the breakdown of a railway lift treated like the breakdown of a connecting train i.e. to be the railways fault and no charge to the passenger.

Or is it treated like the breakdown of a bus or taxi conveying one to the station, i.e, passengers fault for not allowing more time, large "fine" payable.

Does it make any difference whom owns or operates the lift ?
LUL lift preventing one from catching a long distance train, or perhaps a SWT lift preventing one from catching a FGW train.

I would assume that an underground lift failure would be classed as an underground delay, allowing travel on a later service.
I would also assume that since it is the railway's lift, it's the railway's fault, so a later train should be allowed.
However, this thread shows sometimes that travelling on a later service through no fault of the passenger can cause problems.

.

However, both of them are plugged into a 3 pin socket at the foot of the stairs, when I was last there some enterprising soul had unplugged one of them to plug his phone in to charge it....!!!

Not just one I'm afraid, she has been breeding in Leeds as well. She can be found at the escalators on 13B and 15A as well as in her usual spot between platforms 6 and 8 <D

Fair play to the company that conne, sorry, convinced Network Rail to pay loads of money for these things I suppose.

Placing a nice copy of Metro or Evening Standard over her hides her grimacing face and dodgy hand gestures, although unfortunately it doesn't shut her up!!!!

I have to say, it scared the living daylights out of me just now getting off a train at Leeds at 1:20am and to be faced with 2 of these!!! :D
