Everything seems to be running okay this morning, but that's not to say the weather will change.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
FGW are advising on Twitter anyone travelling in & out of Devon & Cornwall to travel earlier & expect delays, cancellations & rail replacement buses.

Given the flooding in recent years also between Taunton and Exeter its time a new route was built between Taunton and Plymouth not that's very likely of course.

Was hit by the mother of all waves last night at Dawlish, and hit quite a bit of ballast lying on the rails....

I am not sure if I used that, I feared that it would compromise the advertisments that appear on the RailUK website. However, computer literacy is not one of my strong points.

You can turn Adblock off on certain sites- for example RailUK, so that those sites are not deprived of advertising revenue. I simply use an adblocker at all times, but add exceptions for RailUK Forums, TT-Forums and other non-commercial websites that rely on advertising revenue without ever having overly invasive adverts.

Indeed, it can be deactivated on a site by site basis at your choosing (I've just done this by clicking the ABP symbol in the bottom left of my browser, although this symbol's position may vary from browser to browser, I'm using Firefox on Ubuntu 13.10). As it happens, I just had a peek at that webcam & a Voyager rolled by as soon as it opened!! :D

Edit - Checking RTT I think it must have been 1S49:

Indeed, there remains numerous mileage of seaside-skirting rail routes still to be found in Britain today. The Cumbrian Coast Line is a western-facing good example of this.

Indeed the ECML may also have difficulties in the areas close to the English/ Scottish boarders.

In this case the track is quite high up above the beach.

Just to spoil it all the Dawlish webcam is now switched off anyway. I seem to remember that the owners said that would happen as they were moving house.

Would these boarders be
(a) English folk who live in Scotland/Scottish folk who live in England
or
(b) those who conduct pirate style raids on their neighbours eg for the purpose of acquiring cattle at no cost?

:D

Sorry - just being silly.

Railcam are the owners, Dawlish Cam was allowed by the owners of the property to be placed in their garden to livestreem to the internet. However, as you say, the owners of the property were moving house early this year and sadly Dawlish Cam appears to now be finished, shame really - unless anyone else within the Dawlish area can host the camera for them.

Hmmmm.
Its about 55 meters above sea level on those spectacular cliffs just north of the border. But 10 miles further south at Beal and Goswick (which I'd include in 'near' the border), the track is just 4 and 5 meters above mean sea level - that's the mean sea level which has seen 5.9 meter spring tides last week.

One imagines such a facility would be useful to NR so they could be benefited by plonking it on a signal post (or similar).

To get back to the OP, Dawlish normally only suffers if the winds are from the South or South East, the current weather is from the South West to West, so sheltered by the Torbay peninsula. However the seas are still rough, and combined with the spring tides last weekend, this can still produce waves coming over the railway which are Voyager unfriendly.

Why not use Adblock? I just followed the link and got none of that.

Thing is with adblock is that if too many people use it then things like Dawlish Cam would end up going subscription, much like Railway Herald.

Tide levels are measured from chart datum, which in this country is Lowest Astronomical Tide, the lowest the tide could ever be (ignoring weather effects). Mean Sea Level is rather higher than this.

Point taken -one can turn off Adblock on desired pages (and just to shew willing, I've registered with them - looks a good site).

They are busy trying to find a new location for the Dawlish webcam, surely the most desirable one?).
