It was posted somewhere on here in the last week or so. Something to do with Mumpers being an old name for beggars and there was a workhouse nearby.

In Lancashire, Crank (near St. Helens), Crooke (near Wigan), Grimeford (south of Chorley).

Plus, although it is a road, not a village, there is Slag Lane (Haydock, near St. Helens) - to the best of my knowledge, the lane is not renowned for ladies with "liberal" morals.

Also a Slag Lane where I am in Lowton, it used to lead up to the Manor House in 'Days of Olde'..... HS2 is planned to cross it & make it a dead end btw, so the name might indeed becomne appropriate 'again' 1 day.

nobody mentioned Peover ? there's an upper & a lower.

Scunthorpe is obviously 1 that falls foul of a lot of swear filters.

If we're talking about amusing road names, quite a few towns used to have a Gropec*nt Lane, although I think all of them got renamed hundreds of years ago. The name was for exactly the reason you might expect.

The one in Oxford is now Magpie Lane off the High Street, if any of you know the place.

Know of Magpie Lane. Despite that name change, we do still have a Crotch Crescent out in Marston...

Trent Barton has "The Cropwell's" on their LED destination screens - arguably a case of the grocer's apostrophe but intended to refer to Cropwell Bishop and Cropwell Butler.
