For the last few years I've been getting a zones 1-2 annual travel card on my oyster card, and they have sent me a paper "Gold Record Card" with my new oyster card.

Is this the same thing as an Annual Gold Card? and does this mean I am entitled to all of the same discounts, like a third off standard/off-peak tickets in the Gold card area? They didn't include any kind of leaflet with my season ticket, and I'm a bit thrown that it has a different name to the Annual Gold Card. Thanks!

Yes. Outside of the Oyster area they will not be able to see that you have the season ticket on your Oyster, so you just show the record card, which is not valid for travel but entitles you to the gold card discounts.

There should be a fold out leaflet available from National Rail stations, which was produced when the changes first came into place at the beginning of last year I think, although it is technically out of date it is still correct.

Or you can just check http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/goldcard :)

It is indeed.

It is issued to show that you have purchased a qualifying product.

That's because the season ticket store on your Oyster effectively is the Gold Card - the record card is just to prove that there's a Gold Card stored on the Oyster. Interesting point though; I can see how it's confusing. By the way, make sure you have the Gold Card discount added to your Oyster Card as well, so that you get a discount on Off-Peak fares when travelling outside your zones. It isn't always (usually?) added automatically when you buy it.

Thanks all, that's really helpful! My brother just had a baby in Kent, so the 1/3 discount should help my wallet recover from those pricey HS1 trains when I go visit :)

It's not called an Annual Gold Card because it works slightly differently. The discount is only valid when the Gold Record Card and the Oyster Card it relates to are shown together. Separately, the discount is not valid.

No use on HS1, but don't forget that for other destinations outside London you don't need to buy a ticket from London; you can ask for a "Boundary Zone" ticket (or ticket from the last station on the route in Zone 2) which can save a few bob, especially travelling North or West. There's no need for the train to call there.

You can't use it on HS1 as Travelcards aren't accepted. The savings are only small for most SouthEastern destinations IIRC, but for example to Reading it's around £5 saving on the fare from Paddington.

The ticket office at King's Cross sold me a boundary zone ticket to Cambridge on Friday, came to about £23 for an off-peak return with the gold card discount, which seemed good value to me.

The ticket office in St Pancras International did let me use the Gold Card on HS1 :s I bought a super off-peak return to Herne Bay for £18.75, which saved me almost a tenner.

Just to be pedantic I hope that your brother's wife /partner had a baby, otherwise this should have been headline news!

You can use your Gold Record Card to get a discount on tickets from St Pancras via HS1 (after 0930). What you can't do is use your Travelcard on HS1 so you shouldn't have been sold a Boundary Zone ticket to travel on HS1.
