Is public transport operating in Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Leeds on Sunday 1st January - after all it's not a public holiday. Not sure why Newcastle is so different to the rest of England, (but see that the Metro centre is closed) so must be a local custom. .

I dont believe there is and if there is on the buses services must be very sparse.

I feel for the OP but surely their friends wouldve known that there isnt any transport on that day as its nto a new thing and they couldve informed them of this.

To compare like with like is the tram running? I know posters have mentioned buses but the op would have preferred the metro. Although even if it was still heavy rail it would be shut if Newcastle- Middlesbrough is.

Sheffield Supertram is running an altered Saturday service. Yellow route is running as normal between Middlewood and Meadowhall, Blue is changed to operate to Meadowhall instead of Malin Bridge and the Purple route isn't running (as the blue route is effectively doing it).

Worth mentioning it's only an hourly service on Sheffield's bus routes and most routes aren't actually running.

Nottingham has a tram service on New Year's Day but neither NCT nor Trentbarton is running any buses.

I'm so old I can remember when 1st January was a normal working day - phoning in sick without a doctor's note resulted in a disciplinary.

Now I see that it is necessary to make January 2nd a national holiday too, or even 3rd, when the 1st occurs at the weekend.

Perhaps Newcastle wishes to redraw the England-Scotland border to come under the saltire.

It used to be a normal weekday in Manchester, with morning and evening "rush hour" extra buses.

Well! I find it very surprising that a city like Newcastle effectively shuts down on New Years Day, but if it's a local custom then who am I to argue I guess.

It's not an especially special day elsewhere, but apparently it is up there. Vive la difference. C'est la vie.

To the person who suggested "Uber", I would caution about the effect of "surge pricing". In a city on a day when there is no other way of getting around than by car, bike, sled or foot I expect a normal taxi might be cheaper.

How long ago is that? My father used to have work New Years Day every year and had to get a lift from a colleague as trains and buses didn't start running till about midday - this was in the 1970s

The closure is likely influenced by being close to Scotland, where everything does close!

The North East is quiet on New Year Day and according to my other half its been like that for at least 30 years.
Its also an extremely quiet day for the railway as well on the whole.

In West Yorkshire the only bus that is running is the 757 to Leeds Bradford Plane Station, other than that there's nowt.

What would be nice would be to see a limited service operate between Otley to Menston, Wetherby to Leeds, Holme Valley to Huddersfield and something around the Cleckheaton / Spen Valley area to Leeds so that they can connect with the rail network which, other than a few morning cancellations, is running as normal.

Yorkshire Carnegie have a rugby match on v London Welsh that day. Thats going to be fun getting from Leeds city centre to Headingly. I bet cabs will be in short supply too if the drivers have been working all night.

Merseyside has buses & trains running on New Years Day. The trains have always been there as far as I can recall, but the buses have gradually expanded and there's now a skeleton service out as far as Chester during the daytime.

Yes, it's a very basic service, but to be honest, it's all that's needed on New Years Day when relatively few people travel.

I think it's therefore a little surprising that there's no provision whatsoever in Newcastle on new Years Day, but given that the Metro Centre is shut (and presumably Eldon will be too), then I can't see that there's much demand for public transport.

Seeing this thread last night got me looking arond. In Bucks it is pot luck, some bus routes that have a Sunday service are running as normal while others are not. The 400 Park and Ride into Oxford is also suspended, I assume that the other routes are as well.

Headingley railway station isn't that far from the stadium, but I am half expecting the rail services to be... lets say comfy.

There hasn't been public transport in the north east for years. Why would there be, everyone is nursing a hangover anyway!

I can't answer for Manchester, but I worked for London Transport, office-bound, but was travelling in from Kent on New Year's Day for an 08.30 start. All bus/train/underground services theoretically ran a full Monday to Friday service, with peak hour extras, but on the bus side 'local arrangements' were made for cancellation of what were essentially journeys for factory/dock workers etc (but never labelled as such) if they were on holiday. The preceding applied if 1st January fell on a Monday to Friday, but normal services ran on a Saturday or Sunday too, including hospital services to places like Banstead and Bexley.

We're arriving in Newcastle by rail on Jan 1 to visit family in Whitley Bay. It never even occurred to us that the bus and metro would not be operating as I've never experienced that anywhere else in England on that day, but that turns out to be the case.

Although I think there should be services on New Year's Day, I think there are many parts of England without services. Which areas are you thinking of?

There is no Northern Rail running on New Year's Day in the North East, I believe it's a local custom.

Surely local custom should have nothing to do with a national rail system?

New Years Day didn't become a Bank Holiday in England until 1st January 1974, so depending how old you are depends how well you remember it.
