SWT Metro has some downsides of not being TfL (higher PAYG fares) but at least they have staff on-board and a company that is a bit inventive and does great refurbs.

SE Metro has the worst of all worlds. Higher fares and clapped out trains with almost no staff on most stations and none on trains.

I have to say I'm not sure what I'm missing here. I've travelled quite a bit on the Southeastern metro routes, and in general I haven't found the 465s too bad at all. Have I just been fortunate?

Same here. Yes, a more comprehensive refresh would be nice but to me the Networkers still look perfectly acceptable inside

I think it's worth mentioning the PRM work on the 465/9s involves all the flooring being replaced (albeit the same design as before), doors reglazed and interior panels repainted where necessary on top of the other work done.

Of London area Metro stock Class 465/0/1/2 and 466 are some of the most tired. As the pics above show, a lot of the flooring has bubbles appearing and cuts. The colour scheme is really drab which doesn't help, and there's ingrained dirt in many areas. It's worse than GWR London area stock like diesel Networkers, which usually smell fresh when I board and look smart.

Also a worse ambience than c2c, almost all SWT metro services and many Southern. LO is also streets ahead. I don't use GA so can't comment on them but they are refurbing 321s aren't they, and most London area stoppers are now LO.

I see SE hired more cleaners that will help, but a proper refurb of these 25 year old trains is long overdue.

This shot nicely shows the very drab interior (aside from the dirt etc). https://www.flickr.com/photos/josht...4rN8-DCSaJo-Dyt1z-9RUJxu-duKdp7-c69QXf-qf3KWF

This refurb would've improved the insides no end if they had a coloured stripe along the luggage rack and seat handles were a colour too. Freshen it up along with new flooring.

The 465/9s look much better inside, as do FGW's 165/166 and the 365s.

Personal opinion, however it looks fine to me apart from the floor. Certainly preferable to a class 700.

Looks fine to me. I saw grumbles under the original photo about its use on routes down to Ashford which I entirely understand, but for routes in their normal environment their condition is perfectly adequate, especially bearing in mind some of the locals in SE London and NW Kent...they get a much harder life than their Turbo and 365 cousins

Barring a few late-night services, the 365s are generally too busy to be vandalised, plus they don't really run through gangsterland in the same way Southeastern do. Stevenage and Hatfield are about as bad as they see, and they're nothing compared to south-east London!

They often run on hour long routes to Gillingham. Not much different to Ashford.

They are so drab inside, and scuffed and marked all over. And they don't travel through areas worse than Southerns 455 and SWTs 455 and 456/which are far nicer inside despite being a decade older as they had a proper refurb.

But if there are so many issues in SE land (and as a frequent evening user for 5 years I've never seen any tagging or real issues) then SE should staff stations in the evening, or have staff on board.

They are also used for almost all of the Tunbridge Wells terminators, which is another hour long journey.

Correct, but those are the refreshed 465/9s which we've already established are in much better condition.

The 465/0/1/2s referred to are truly grubby inside which doesn't show very well in the photo.

I remember the EPBs on the Gillingham route, now they were grotty inside!

(cue replies from people who thought they were wonderful and much better than the Networkers )

I'll have to say that I sometimes forget how grotty Southeastern trains are until I travel on say a SWT service - then realise how shameful most of them are. Especially the 465s.

They are graffiti free as despite the areas reputation they travel through (as remarked upon before based on 10-20 year old stereotypes) it isn't a major problem. So Southeastern really just have to keep them half decent and clean which they often just don't do alongside choosing such a drab colour and interior scheme.

Provided that the train can actually have time off of actually being out ferrying passengers up and down the line to get a really decent clean in the depot as due to the shortage of trains on the SE network until the 377s finally arrive hopefully at the end of the year to allow the 465/9s to go back to Metro workings full time (as per TSGNs franchise agreement to cascade several units) then deep cleans on metro stock isnt always possible as most of it is actually in use including on what should be 465/9 workings plus you do still get vandals on the SE network who think it is funny to go through 3 out of the 4 coaches on a 465 and take up all the seat pads and throw them on the floor.

I'm currently on 465012. It appears to have had all of the RVAR changes done (door area vinyl, new door buttons, wheelchair area in the TSOL) but they haven't touched the original toilet or removed the seats around it and replaced them with side-facing seats. Have they scaled back the work they're doing on them, or is the toilet replacement done separately?

There was an issue involving the toilets on the BREL units so they're having the toilets done at a later date. Metro Cammell units aren't affected.

What's the longest journey they get used for? Would it be short enough that they could get away with just removing the bogs?

Longest they can do is London to Dover, so removing them isn't very sensible.
