G'day everyone,

I'm enjoying a boys day out in Sheffield next Tuesday and we're on the look out for pubs! Those pubs need to sell real ale for less than £3.50 a pint! Somewhere that sells simple to eat food would be good too. The pubs also need to be in and around the city centre.

Any ideas would be very welcome!

Kind regards,

Richmond Commuter!

You need to get down to Kelham Island - a bit outside the centre but the Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern and Riverside are all excellent. Shalesmoor tram will get you there too.

In town try the Red Deer and the Bath Hotel.

I was there some years ago, but I do recall one not far from the bus and railway stations, I think it may have been called the Penny Black or something similar to do with postage stamps, there was also a more modern one near by, can't remember the name but it was and did food, a bit like Wetherspoons, but I don't think it was one of theirs. I think there used to be and maybe still is, a pub on one of the platforms of Sheffield Midland Station.?

The Rutland Arms - They do food
Shakespears - Think they have sandwiches sometimes
Red Deer - do food, bit of a walk though
Old Queens Head - other end of bus station to railway station, near the penny black (not been for years, don't think it does real ale)
The Bankers Draft - a wetherspoons one just by Castle Square tram stop

[edit]Sheffield Tap is still there on platform 1, don't think they do food, and they're fairly pricey iirc

I've never much fancied the look of the Penny Black from the outside, and as noted above it possibly doesn't even serve ale. The Old Queen's Head basically across the road is a much better bet; it's a Thwaites pub so offers a reliable selection of their ales, and also serves a decent range of reasonably priced pub grub.

The Sheffield Tap on the station is a relatively recent opening and it goes without saying that it is a superb place, but the pints might be a bit pricier than £3.50!

Seriously though, anywhere you go in Sheffield city centre it is very difficult to go wrong with finding a decent pub. :)

Many thanks for all of your suggestions :)

There are at least six pubs that we aim to visit so Tuesday should be a good laugh. I've not had a day out in Sheffield for twenty years so navigation might be interesting!

I like the Sheffield Tap and I like it's beers but I don't think anyone should be asked to pay over £3.50 a pint north of Birmingham.

There's a very good Samuel Smith's pub in the city centre called The Brown Bear.

It's on Norfolk Street, and a pint of Old Brewery Bitter will cost you £2.60!

The Rutland Arms have great food, I really recommend it. Red Deer is also great. Basically, there are a lot of nice pubs near the city centre. I am sure that you will easily find something really nice. :)

Having lived there for a few years and frequented many places I can fully recommend any of the following. I've put them in a good order for a proper pub crawl as well ;)
- Sheffield Tap on platform 1. Beer usually between £3-3.50. Some of the imports are expensive.
- Rutland Arms just down the road from the union. About 2-3mins walk. Reasonable selection in there.
- The Roebuck on Charles Street isn't a bad one on the way into town. Decent food.
- Make your way to the Tap & Tankard behind John Lewis in the centre which is a good Kelham Island pub in the centre.
- 'Benjamin Huntsman' and 'Waterworks' wetherspoons are both basically next door to the Tap & Tankard.
- Move yourself round to the West Street Ale House. Quite a new one but few beers on there
- Then you can drop downhill to the excellent pubs grouped around Kelham Island. In particular, the Shakespeare, Kelham Island Tavern, the Fat Cat and the Harlequin!

Enjoy :P

Despite having taken up residence in Sheffield for the best part of two years, I'm ashamed to say that I've only had experience of the two city centre Wetherspoons, and The Graduate on West Street. However I believe that I may actually be visiting The Royal Standard tomorrow afternoon, so we'll see how that goes.

I have heard good things about the Kelham Island establishments though, again I spent a lot of time in that area last year but never made it to one of the pubs or restaurants.

Many thanks for all of your recommendations :)

In no particular order we managed to visit the following

Fact Cat
The Roebuck
Rutland Arms
Bath Hotel
Red Deer
Kelham Island Tavern
Riverside
Shakespeare
Sheffield Tap

All of those were fantastic but our favorite was the Kelham Island Tavern. The Landlord and locals were very friendly and it's smashing little pub with great beers and lots of little quirks. A return visit will be made when Derby play Wednesday later this season.

Thanks again everyone :)
