Television adverts with no logic.

Scam calls from "engineers" purporting to be from "Microsoft Windows" telling you there are errors on your computer and to fix it they blackmail you into parting with cash (for nothing, of course!).

Don't you get them? I get at least two a week! I must have so many errors they must think I'm Bury's back four...

Telling them you run Linux doesn't stop them either. I had one the other week who immediately changed into LINUX mode before I told him where to go and rang off!

I know that usually you can escalate something within a company, or go via the press office to push for a more detailed investigation, but BT Openreach seems to have no such channels. It feels like a faceless organisation from the outside, such that nobody can ever give any sort of update. If they were actually struggling to get new paperwork sorted, why not say? Why not allow my MP to go to the other parties to chase them to speed things up?
It's a condition of the licence they operate under. They are only allowed to speak to their customers - which isn't you - their customers are ISPs, telecoms companies (e.g. BT, Sky), a local authority (with respect to planning issues) or another business who purchases products directly from them.

All enquiries from the general public have to be referred back to one of the above. Trust me, if it's frustrating for you as a customer it was ten times more frustrating for me as a BT person. We weren't allowed to just call up Bob and ask what's happening, we had to go through the same official channels as anyone else and at times deal with the same lack of clarity as everyone else. Even if Bob sat across the office from me.

My first line is "Oh, good, you rang me back....have you solved the problem I was having with my FWH?" and if they havn't rung off, and not a clue about what I am talking about, I ask "but you SAID you were an engineer....."

Mind you that's if I can be bothered picking the phone up. I have it normally on answerphone which stops the scam calls dead!

That's surprising - I would've thought they realised that people running Linux generally have a little bit of computer knowhow - at least enough to see through their nonsense.

You are correct. Yesterday, for the first time (to my knowledge) a genuine local call came in with the full call attached.

What annoys me is that, if I pay a monthly fee, I can have number withheld call blocking so they DO have the technology. Why should I have to pay to stop a nuisance they are causing?

I have contacted my MP and also the MP specialising in nuisance calls (I forget his name) to try and force phone companies to make this a free service. The companies won't do this voluntarily, they make far too much money from the scam call industry.

Last month, BT Call Protect was launched as a free service. I have this now as part of my BT package.

Providing that the scam call is not from a "number withheld" connection, there is a website called "Who called me" of which a reading of the comments therein makes for interesting reading.

I know I'm not their customer but for a while, they did communicate with the general public for certain things (they had an online form as I recall) so I could ask something like why BT was doing work locally or similar.

Perhaps that got abused because they definitely don't talk to anyone now. I had a good contact who sadly left, as I could ask things and bypass all the usual channels.

With a company like BT, finding the right contact is always a bonus. Engineers will blab about things for ages!

Annoying adverts have a track record of working well. And I recall that many cringeworthy adverts I can barely stand to watch are well liked by some people.

I've been at other people's homes and seen people laugh hysterically at some adverts and made me question why I'm friends with them. :)

I haven't seen a single Go Compare advert which has been sensible or even logical. I get that daft adverts can often work well, but Go Compare's don't work for me at all. Credit where it's due though, the guy who sings (Wynne Evans) has got a very good voice and is probably the only good thing about the adverts.

But that's not illogical, it's just unlikely.
If the two bridesmaids were a talking goat and a talking llama, that would be illogical.

He is a professional tenor; I think that's why he was chosen in the first place.

You wait until the insurance companies decide to save money by pooling their resources.

We will then end up with a single advert in which we are invited to Go Compare the bleeping meerkat that is trapped underneath an upside down red telephone with wheels on it while the Man from the Pru holds a red, blue, yellow and green striped umbrella above the whole scene, set in the shadow of Norwich cathedral, to keep the rain off...

Hope I haven't given anyone nightmares with that scenario! :lol:
