Who wants to drink beer that early in the morning anyway. Am I the only one who finds that disgusting.

Maybe "disgusting" is pushing it a little, but I certainly can't see why a lack of alcohol that early in the morning is in any way a problem. It did strike me as an odd concern earlier on today.

Perhaps the OP might find some help here?

I wouldn't call it disgusting at all, but equally I can see why wanting alcohol at that time can raise eyebrows.

When I lived in Germany it was considered perfectly normal to have a beer with a cooked breakfast.

Spirits at that time would perhaps point to something more problematic but I certainly don't see anything wrong with the occasional pint of lager to take the edge off a stressful or really early morning, as long as it doesn't become a habit.

I've had beer after a week of nights in the past, waiting for an appropate train home. Not everyone works 9-5.

So what is the correct time to start drinking? Why is it ok to start when the pubs open which is normally only a couple of hours later?

It's okay to drink beer whenever you like. It's a free country.

But, I must say I can't stand the taste of heavy drinks before lunch. Mine's a GnT with lunch.

Ok I'll bite

I finish work at 7am then have to travel home from Glasgow to Newcastle, I should be able to have a beer if I want without it being 'disgusting' imo

I don't object to people drinking that early in the morning myself, although it's not something I would do. The earliest time of day I'll have an alcoholic drink is around 12:00, and that's only if I'm going to watch Sheffield Wednesday playing.

Call me disgusting if you like but I've got home after a week of nights and enjoyed a few bottles at 6am...

Not in the slightest. Unusual certainly but not disgusting. Drunken belligerence and rowdiness are unwelcome regardless of what time it is.

For my part I go with the three hour rule - it's ok for me to drink 3 hours after waking up

Not before midday, unless it's an all-nighter which is technically still the day before, and those occasions are very infrequent these days.

I do object to the word "disgusting", though. There are plenty of pubs throughout the land that open early in the morning to cater for those who work funny hours. If it's okay for you to knock off at 5pm and have a few jars on the way home, why can't I do the same when I finish my night shift at 6am?

I also sometimes have a drink at 8am in the morning if I've been working nights.when I lived in staff accommodation in hotels, the staff thought it strange to have a beer at that time of day, but not about going out for a drink when you had just got up.

I regularly see drinkers at 8am on a weekday at the Wetherspoons outside Liverpool St. They've likely just come off a night shift, so is their going home time.

Way back in the early '70s when I used to board the Saturday Clacton to Liverpool St. train at 06:42 at Colchester, as it was a lightly loaded class 309, I would travel in the buffet car and have a coffee on the way. I can remember the odd regular who tucked into a plate of cornflakes which was then washed down with a can of beer from the buffet counter. Not for me but I did find the smell of beer a bit unpleasant at that time of day.

I remember once going into the buffet at my local station at 8 am and seeing a guy knocking back a beer. What was a little worrying was that he was wearing an SBB badge with Lokführer (Driver) on it. There is a depot 2 stops up the line so presumably he'd just come off shift.

Slightly more thought-provoking was the time in a town in Mexico when I was due to fly home the next day, I was in the bar and had a couple of jars with a guy. This guy greeted me at the door of the plane the next day with 4 bars on his shoulder.

After a shift's work. Which could end at 8am therefore, as long as you ain't driving...have a nice long beer!

When I worked shifts all I wanted to do was go to bed, I couldn't face the idea of a beer.

But it's always 5pm somewhere. I don't judge. Unless you're the guy I saw thrown off a bus in Newcastle last week for being drunk...at 8.15am.

Amsterdam, summer of 1969. Prospect of casual work at the docks each morning, turn up at such-and-such café at 6 a.m. This café never served any food that I saw, but did a roaring trade in Dutch gin in litre glasses. I've never been able to stand the smell of gin and this reinforced all my prejudices. Desperate for the work and money though I was, three days of this (and only on the last day did I get employed) was enough. Mind you, having done that day's work I could maybe see why you'd want to be drunk to even contemplate it.

I work shifts and I would get sacked if I had a beer on the way in to work of an evening.

I was on a Glasgow to Euston train the other day, around 9AM, and a man (travelling with his teenage daughter), had finished his Carling, and had started swigging wine straight from the bottle.

I went in to work the other morning and two girls had a fight which resulted in a lot of customers hearing a load of foul and abusive language and the girls both being sacked, they were both sober. What is your point?

Drinking time "etiquette" also doesn't apply when in airline lounges at airports.

I remember having breakfast in a small hotel in Normandy at around 9am when the guys who had been working on a hole in the road for the previous 2 hours all came in for a calvados break.

Absolutely. But surely not if you have one on the way home in the morning (unless you're driving)?

Depending on the job, some certainly do say that you cannot be in your uniform (or have your company ID visible) if you are out drinking. How enforceable that is I have no idea!
