I suspect we are going to get questions about the possibility of relocating:

[Please note that for the above applicants must live within a 10 mile radius of the depot they are applying to. Unfortunately your application will not be considered if you do not meet the above requirement]

Good Luck to all those apply!

10 miles doesn't give much scope to be honest. Something that would have been perfect for me apart from I live 25 miles away instead of 10.

Obviously would have been willing to relocate, don't understand this to be honest, surely these tocs want the best of the best, even if it means candidates relocating?

I agree. 10 miles is not very far at all. Interesting though that when they were recruiting for trainee conductors very recently (if not still currently), you had to live within 20 mile radius if I remember correctly instead of 10.

They clearly anticipate that they will get a lot of applicants. This was discussed on different thread and one possibility is that people who say they will relocate don't actually end up doing so which ruins it for everyone else.

This is just a complete guess but perhaps they want to keep recruitment to that particular catchment area otherwise you'll get people from all over the country applying which would be unfair on the local people who want the job. I guess it would be annoying (to me anyway) if every time a vacancy for a certain job popped up, and it always went to an 'outsider' (i.e. someone who lives outside the catchment area). This is probably wrong and has no link but I'm just thinking about when I applied for grammar schools/ secondary schools, you had to be in a certain catchment area even though a lot of places don't have grammar schools.

And? That's the way the world works. If you get beaten by someone who's an "outsider" so be it. If they're more suited than the locals, why shouldn't they get the job?

I know, as I saying I was just thinking back to my 11+ days.

Regardless of whatever me and you think, Southeastern clearly anticipate that there will be enough 'suitable' applicants for the job.

This might be a stupid question but when it says you get such and such allowance of £1900 etc. what does that actually mean?!

Regional allowance, in recognition of the fact it's an expensive place to live. Tops up your pay but doesn't count towards your pensionable salary

I'm going to apply anyway, never know they might put me on standby for something closer to where I live.

Good luck although I would have thought they would ask in the application, "Do you live within a 10 mile radius" and if you answer no then your application will automatically be rejected. Also if they reject you (even though you were not really rejected but rather just weren't eligible), you have to wait 6 months before you can apply again.

OK mate point taken. If that's the case I won't apply and will leave it until something closer turns up. I got to the dmi with Crossrail and failed at last hurdle, so don't want to jeopardise my chances with other tocs.

Good luck to those who do apply.

Also thanks for the advice.

It's about fatigue.

Also the regional allowance is wrong.

Thanks for that info but most tocs do allow more than 10 miles. And it doesn't really answer the question as to why they don't allow for relocation.

Edit: ignore this comment as I don't want to turn this thread into a "why isn't relocation allowed by Southeastern." Good luck to all those who apply :)

If not a regional allowance what is it?

The value is wrong. They do not get the full regional allowance. In fact I didn't think they got any.

SE regional allowance is split into 3 groups. Inner, Outer, and GTFO. I thought Hastings and Fav fell into the latter.

SE is specifically stating 10miles. That's their requirement and who cares about other TOCs. Either live within the criteria or don't apply. Each TOC can set their own criteria for application. If SE want to set 10 miles then so be it.

Why don't they allow for relocation ? Quite frankly; because they don't have to. Those who relocate are easily bumped down the queue for locals and those who do meet the application criteria. Why waste everyone's time ? It's an expense that SE clearly do not want to take on.

I applied. Gillingham is less than half hour from Faversham by car, let alone the fact that I would relocate straightaway. If they reject it, so be it, no drama.

But what's around Faversham though, in terms of big urban areas? The only big town is Canterbury.

Sittingbourne is just up the M2.
