I think some definitions would be good (or possibly state which railways fall under which heading, e.g. preserved, new-build, etc).

I'm wondering what date the Snowdon Mountain Railway became a preserved railway, or is it in the category of new-build? When is new-build no longer new but old? Snowdon Mountain Railway is still, as far as I am aware, fulfilling its original function. My local railway line along the south coast was built in 1849 and still performing its original function. Some original station buildings are preserved, others are preserved from later eras but they have updated the rolling stock. Makes me wonder what railways fit into which definitions!

Shred - Your next trick should be to work out the route miles of all the different gauges, work out the total distances and see how far we’d get if you laid it all out in a straight line.

If you’re not too busy that is... ;)

Out of interest has anyone been to nearly all of the ever lengthening list? I must admit I've done well over half!

Mustn't forget Sir Bill McAlpine's Fawley Hill Railway. (Technically and slightly awkwardly named the Fawley Museum Society Ltd). It's a full 4'8 1/2 inch gauge and a couple of miles long with the steepest bank of any "normal" railway in the UK (and possibly Europe) at 1 in 14 increasing to 1 in 13 for a short distance.

I wonder what you’d have to shell out to get it running again?

Just a minor change. I see you have Downpatrick & County Down Railway preservation society of Ireland. It should just read Downpatrick & County Down Railway. The RPSI operate mainland steam trips and aren't a preserved line as such, though their Whitehead Railway Museum does offer trips up and down their yard.

Never realised about that one. Need to tick off compressed air haulage!
Reminds me of the sadly now gone Atmospheric Railway museum in the old pumping house at Starcross. They had about five metres of demonstration track inside with two Hoovers connected to a pipe on the track.
So I can genuinely say I’ve had vacuum cleaner haulage.
