The immersed Fehmarnbelt tunnel that will connect Denmark and Germany is gearing up for construction, ahead of schedule. Once completed, it will become the world’s longest road and rail tunnel, and will open new socio-economic opportunities on both sides of the border.

Any thoughts on this project? I seen on Twitter it means no more train on a boat? 2 hours from Germany to Denmark too?

The train ferry ends this year unfortunately.

Amazing project though.

Looks great the ferry but I’m not a boat person and like faster travel. How long until the new tunnel opens I would certainly fancy a trip from Hamburg to Denmark as a day visit?

According to their website, the tunnel and infrastructure improvements in Denmark and Germany will reduce the journey time between Hamburg and Copenhagen from 4.5 hours today, to 2.5 hours once everything is done. They also expect the frequency to be stepped up.

The tunnel is expected to open in 2028. The upgrade work on both sides of the tunnel should be done by then as well.

If the tunnel is not opening until 2028? why is the train ferry ending this year?

Because the whole line through Holstein (much of it a single line secondary route) is closing for rebuilding to HS standards in December, so trains cant access the ferry.

In essence it's a bit like a rather larger version of Bicester-Oxford or EWR - a new line that happens to be built on an old formation. I believe the local stations are likely to close too.

There will be lots of engineering works on the Danish as well as the German side of the crossing. Because of that the decision was made to reroute all HH-CPH trains over Flensburg from December 2019 onwards. While this is a much longer route than the current route, trains can run faster and there's no need for a ferry crossing. The total journey time won't increase much.

In Germany, the local line will be closed for a couple of years while the railway is upgraded. There will be high quality replacement buses with wifi, facing seats, toilets and the possibility to convey bicycles.

I did this as part of a beautiful 39EUR Stockholm-Berlin ticket a few years ago, and I'd really recommend it while it still exists.
By playing with bahn.de, I was able to produce a lovely route that included stopovers in Copenhagen and Hamburg, and the whole thing ran perfectly on time.
