Should TPE be loaning an 802 to HT for driver training?

So TransPennine Express (a franchised operator) have lent Hull Trains (a private operator) rolling stock?

It's a good job there's lots of room on TransPennine trains. No extra capacity needed.

Yeah, a train that isn't in passenger service so has no bearing on capacity whatsoever. Both are FirstGroup operators as well.

Try again?

That's my point. I thought Transpennine / First were 'desperate' to increase capacity, and yet a higher priority seems to be Hull trains.

They are still in testing. This allows the train to be tested whilst also doing something equally useful.

I think it is to do with driver training requirements. TPE can't free any more drivers than current for 802 training but they have a spare unit. Training Hull Trains drivers up now means that their 802s can enter service soon after acceptance (thus getting rid of the 180s asap)

Almost as if putting the passenger first despite different companies.

Putting the *bank account* first.

It has been very simply explained to you how this is not having any impact on tpe operations and yet you insist on commenting otherwise.

Tpe can't spare loads of drivers to train on 802s because the don't have enough. So a unit is spare that can help out first hill trains train their staff earlier. Bear in mind Hull trains have their own massive issues so this is helping them and their passengers it is actually a good news story. But clearly you don't want to see that!

TPE effectively get a unit (presumably a rolling selection of units) tested and debugged...

Indeed! I literally do not see a downside to this. By the time tpe are looking st fleet introduction HT have their own.

It is so sensible that if you'd asked me I'd have said it was not likely to happen in a month of Sundays. Next you'll be telling me they've lent one to see if they affect the signals on the MML south of Bedford...

no doubt this will have to be tested. With the service being planned around pairs of 5-car sets each with 4 gensets then that testing would need to be representative of actual operating conditions, so it would need to be a 5 car + 9 car 80x set. Or wait until the actual units start to arrive, which I'd suggest would be too late if they then find issues that need resolving.

Thankyou. So the restriction is the TransPennine crewing not the TransPennine rolling stock situation.

All good.

Or... TPE can only release X amount of drivers at any one time to do driver training while also operating their normal services. So not every one of there 802's is in operation. However, that clearly doesn't fit in with your agenda.

My point is they don’t have enough resource in the first place. Which seems to be why useful rolling stock is being leased out rather than used for TransPennine training and then passenger services.

As of right now there are 7 cancellations listed for today due to “driver shortage”. Plus others for other reasons, and presumably earlier in the day. Which is really odd if there is no driver shortage.

PPM at just 65%.

As has been mentioned on other threads TPE are stretched for traincrew due to training requirements on thier 3 new fleets. And a warm sunny BankHoliday means drivers that may previously been available for overtime on a Sunday have chosen not to work this weekend.

This means an accepted 802 can readily be loaned to a sister company operator for thier training needs. Its a total non issue so why keep bleating on about it?
