I would nominate the "refurbished" 444's first class, I personally find standard class more comfortable, the old first class is a world away with larger seats that recline and 1+2 configuration not 2+2.

Completely agree, a massive downgrade of comfort, not worth paying any extra for now. Don't bother with it.

First Class is all about what you don't get rather than what you do but having said that the Hitachis on GWR are disappointing in comparison with the opulence of the HST

To make it fair lets not include Class 387's first class which are to many eyes, standard class with some napkins stucked on.

See class 375-377 for earlier examples on how to stick napkins with a number 1 on them that pass for 1st class.

It seems normal practice for the railway to constantly reduce comfort and the general ambience of a carriage, while buses, coaches and cars seem to somehow manage to improve with each new vehicle. Captive audience perhaps.

I have managed to sit on Greater Anglia's first class seats in standard class, as some of the first class seats were installed in the standard class part of the carriage while the rest were the actual standard class seats in 3+2.

The standard class in the GA Mark 3 carriages, though not the worst, I don't find as comfortable as their standard class seats.

Class 222 (or any other) composite carriages without a dividing door. Defeats the point, I travel first class for a more peaceful journey, yet on such trains you can still be subjected to screaming children.

RE 170's: I don't mind the 1st class compartments on 170's, I find them quite comfortable and cosy.

What was it about anyway?

Good question ! I've no idea - I thought I'd only deleted the multiples and left the original post!

Edit: just worked it out - it was me responding to your earlier message about if you could nominate a first class product from over the Irish sea saying 'Premier Class?'.

Ah, well that was addressed to the OP to ask if they'd allow it, but simply that if it's allowed, I can think of something that beats many of our InterCity stocks for laughable first class. Otherwise, I'll nominate something closer to home instead.

Class 80x First Class is deeply disappointing, but I would argue that this is more so on GWR.

LNER's proposition is significantly better, the interior is more pleasant and the trains are cleaner. I actually enjoyed my outbound journey on the Azuma more than the return trip on a HST. (I'll get my coat)

Well worth it for an antimacassar and a sticker with a 1 on it! :D
To be fair, the first class on a 377/4 and /5 is at least slightly better than standard. You get slightly more legroom because of the weird longitudinal seats, the seats themselves are actually a tiny bit bigger and I do like the nice little compartment, much more peaceful. All other 377's are very sub-par though.

People with screaming children are fully entitled to buy first class tickets too. Being in first class does not entitle anyone to not have to put up with fellow passengers. Personally I have no problem with children being children, I find selfish a***holes speaking loudly on mobile phones or playing music and videos out loud far more irritating and offensive than screaming children. I also know that being in first class doesn't entitle me to freedom from these numpties, sadly neither does being in a 'quiet' coach.

Yip Class 800 has the gold seal of approval for garbage FC.

It's not great, I tried it once and moved to Standard on deciding it wasn't worth the money for Weekend First, but it is really not the worst. It's far better than any of the 2+2 sham-First-Class provisions on a number of operators.

I was reading this thread waiting for GA’s mk3 first seats to crop up!
They are terrible. I’m 6’2 which doesn’t help matters as the seats are low down.
Standard seats all the way for me.

SWR first class on the 450's(?) is the same as TPE standard. Though you may get a complimentary hot drink in the morning!

To be fair, the First Class on 350/2s and 450s is probably the right layout - one fewer seat across than Standard. On the 350/1s and /3s it's a joke - Standard is more comfortable.

The main problem with first class is the amount of extra premium you pay and what you get for that extra payment.

The refurbished GWR HST 1st class with the leather seats was top notch. Definitely worth the extra premium and the weekend upgrade was a bargain.

The GWR IET's 1st class is a major downgrade and quiet frankly a rip-off. I don't know who signed that off, but they have explaining to do.

As for other services, I'm of the opinion that if 1st class has 2+2 seating, it's not first class. It's 2nd class and the 2nd class with 2+3 is 3rd class (SWR Class 450).

As for the Class 170 turbostars - I nearly chocked on my beer when I saw the extra premium on Cross-Country for having a 1st class seat and what you actually get.

450 First Class has the Electrostar seats. TPE standard has the regular 2+2 Desiro seats.
Exact type of seat aside, if this image is accurate, it looks no better than TPE standard to me. Are the seats a lot more comfortable than they look? Certainly anything that is 2+2 should never be called 1st class in my opinion.

Don’t see why 2+2 is such an issue. 365 first is 2+2 and is generally well regarded - indeed good enough for the Queen.

2+2 is good enough for anyone! but it should be branded "Standard Class"!

What don’t you get with 2+2 that you get with 2+1? With the former one gets a bigger table and less chance of someone sitting directly opposite. To me that’s a decent enough trade-off, and with no one else in the bay of four it wouldn’t even begin to be an issue for me.

What do you get for 2+1 that you don't get for 2+2?

A seat that is both a window and aisle seat (on the 1 side), or a seat wide enough that a large person doesn't come into contact with the person in the next seat (on the 2 side).

Without those features I have no interest whatsoever in First Class. TBH, I'd only do Weekend First if a seat on the 1 side was available. It's a window seat with access to the aisle that is the "killer app" that makes it worth it to me.

First Class in a 450 was almost indistinguishable from standard class in a class 377/5, and many other similar units. It has been refurbished, thus splitting it up into two areas of 8 seats at remote ends of the train. The seats are mostly the same but with leather-plastic cover rather than a soft moquette. The only change in configuration is that you can no longer have an airline seat and if 8 people are occupying First Class you must walk to the other end of the train to find a seat.
